Re: UCLA Bruins
The courtroom scenes in My Cousin Vinny are obviously fluffed up for Hollywood but there are quite a few things they get right about (granted it varies by jurisdiction) law and procedure in those scenes. It’s the “best” of the available Hollywood options by a long shot though.innocentbystander wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2026 4:16 pmFair enough.
When I was posting on Eagleoutsider (before they disbanded the forum) half of the BC grads wound up graduating law school. If you didn't major in computer science, then an undergraduate degree from a school like BC doesn't do very much without following it up with a law degree, a medical degree, or an MBA. It was basically a college football forum for lawyers. They told me the most "accurate" (if you can call it that) movie/tv show that illustrates good actual lawyering was, My Cousin Vinny. They said the courtroom scenes when Joe Pesci turned the corner was good trial law defense representation. Myself, I can't stand the majority of John Grisham movies like A Time to Kill. I think they are a bit ridiculous. Although I did like The Firm.
Everything else, unrealistic as you said. TV law and Movie law, its just hot young girls with model great looks acting as lawyers. Kind of like Grey's Anatomy is for doctors.
I proudly took AFAM 040 at Carolina.

Re: UCLA Bruins
I thought a good Grisham book would be where the lawyer kills a guy, frames a friend, and then offers to be his lawyer during the trial, and fucks it up just enough that the friend gets convicted. Then the convicted guy earns his law degree in prison and blah, blah, blah cut to to the chase, a black guy rapes him in his cell one night
no, of course he figures how to get the lawyer to admit it and earns his freedom

Re: UCLA Bruins
The Rainmaker was almost as ridiculous as A Time to Kill. There is no real KKK anymore, racist white men do NOT rape black girls (truly racist white men do not want to even go NEAR a black person, let alone rape them), and there are no health insurance companies that "hard sell" health insurance coverage door-to-door in poorer neighborhoods, cash only. No such health insurance company ever existed, silly John Grisham. The Brethren was a good book. The Associate was a good book. They didn't make either one of them into movies (yet.) And The Brethren is a bit dated to be made into a movie, it kind of had to be made in 2000 because today, with the way the Republican Party is after 9-11 and the economy of the USA, I don't think it would make any sense. It was very Bill Clinton-esque USA so to speak.
I loved The Firm. I loved Pelican Brief but there again, that kind of thing could never happen because if two Supreme Court justices are murdered, we are going to find out who did it and heads would roll. That could not be covered up by "an assassin." That is especially the case if the assassin links back to people who serve the White House Chief of Staff. In the world of reality, they sent a bunch of people in the Nixon Administration to prison for Watergate, and no one died from that.

I've seen so much of this growing up in Baptist church, and also when I was in church leadership as an adult. It hadn't taken away from my faith in the Bible, but made me realize early on that never take any preacher or anyone else's word as gospel. I don't join a church with a cult personality as it's leader. They are the ones you need to have a leary eye on. I may share some stories later.eCat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2026 1:07 pm I grew up active in church. She fucked the preacher who was in his 30's. This was the early 90's. Her family was big into church, her dad was our sunday school teacher. All the adult leaders were in a group called The Apple Dumpling Gang who donated money and did charity work in the name of the church and her parents were big into it. They also worked a farm together.
Broke up the church, several people left. She had 3 kids with her husband and he left her ass in a heartbeat. I didn't think she should have married him because he was a bit of a selfish ass, but whatever - fucking the preacher isn't the answer.
Why would anyone follow a preacher who fucked one of his married church members?
By then, I was in college and had quit doing anything with the church but that was about the time I decided it was time to be a Deist, which by my interactions is more hated by Christians than Atheist. They think they can convert an Atheist. Deist just take the easy way out.

Re: UCLA Bruins
My sister was big into the Methodist church
sometime recently the Methodist church decided all churches have to turn over their assets to the larger Methodist entity and any church wanting out had to pay some major money. That didn't go over well at all.

Re: UCLA Bruins
The Methodist church never struck me as the type of church that people would get big into. It was kinda like show up on Sunday (occasionally), maybe contribute some time to some outreach program once a year or so, go to the white gift service at Christmas and then you're good. That's actually my type of religious sect...

By then, I was in college and had quit doing anything with the church but that was about the time I decided it was time to be a Deist, which by my interactions is more hated by Christians than Atheist. They think they can convert an Atheist. Deist just take the easy way out.
From 80-someting to 1990, our church had two pastors, a husband and wife team. He was the primary pastor and SHE was the primary leader of the church school for the littles. Whatever she said regarding Sunday school for the littles, goes. At the time, I was much more liberated and accepted this, thought this type of thing was normal and healthy and even Christian. Well, in 1990, things started coming off the rails because the husband and wife team had a deal: he did all the funerals and she did all the weddings. That was a critical arrangement for their marriage. But some people started to squawk, wanted HIM to oversee their wedding, be married by HIM, not HER. This did not happen. So, a committee was formed with the two pastors and members of the church to come to some kind of agreement. That went to shit. Instead, the two pastors were like, we are leaving. They found another church (one with much less resources and no parsonage) and left us.
I was then invited to join the Diaconate at age 19. I was the youngest member.
We put together a new committee, a pastoral search committee. They found us a pastor, a woman (apparently, they were only looking for women in 1990) and she was not, nor had she ever been married. She checked every box, seemed perfect to lead a "Christian Church" with a congregation in Massachusetts. And we all bought in, myself included. I was very pro-Pastor. Then the shit hit the fan.
It turns out we had to start questioning her sexuality. We didn't know if this "Christian Pastor" was possibly a lesbian! But that is not was really drove a stick into the heart of what was happening. No the bad thing was, one of the members of the church was over the parsonage one day for some kind of picnic and he had to run to the bathroom. He said he had a headache, so he opened up the bathroom vanity to look for aspirin and he found SSRIs instead. So he talked to a nurse practitioner in the church who prescribed this shit and she said that the only way you could get what our pastor had, was if you were diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder. So, she talked to her husband and the two of them held a private meeting with the pastor (whom they were both suspicious of and did not want near any of the children in the church) and they told her, from this day forward, they would donate their money to the church for the missions of the church but not one cent of their money would be given TO HER as if they had any control at all on any of the money they were "tithing." They couldn't fire her. All they could do, is take down the money. And they told everyone that they could about what they were doing and why.
Oh my heavens.
Thunder and roar. The Pastor (on a bi-polar moment) attacked another member of our church (poor lady) grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her saying "you think you can get rid of me and you can't! You're Evil!" She did this in front of another member of the diaconate. I am glad I wasn't there or I might have gotten myself arrested. Right there, at that one moment, I swapped sides and was no longer supportive of this pastor. Cut to the chase, 1991, we formed another committee and they hired an outside consultant to help us with our "problem" and the consultant FIRED the pastor. Gone. And we all just had to accept their decision.
From that day forward, I have been a bit more Christian in my beliefs. Under no circumstances would I ever sit in a church where the pastor is a woman. No way. Women should submit and remain silent in church, never lead. That is straight Biblical doctrine and GOD is never wrong.
