The committee, at minimum should be expressly forbidden from using any information that's not in their empirical data. They should not be deciding qualitatively how injuries can affect a team. I guarantee you that whole concept affecting the field now is just the result of some committee in the past needing it as an excuse, using it, and now its a tool in the toolbox. Nobody should give a flying fuck about what Bubba Cuinningham or Greg Byrne or whoever things about how good West Virginia is without Tucker Devries. They are not qualified to make that kind of evaluation. A better committee would probably be expressly forbidden from watching or reading about basketball at all. All they get is these numbers, and lock em in a room like a jury.

we need to remove the human element entirely.

every team should know from day one where they stand getting into the tournament based on a ranking system. One that values the entire season. So that if a player does get hurt in the last 5 games it doesn't derail their entire season.

I agree.

A computer algorithm does all this. I could do the whole thing with four or five data tables, a couple stored procedures, a single report view, and one daily ETL feed updating all division 1 wins and losses. Then everyone would know all the time exactly where they stand and what would have to happen to get into the tournament.

Pretty much impossible to say the last team in (which evidently Carolina was this year) in any year deserves to be in without qualifiers. If you're that far down, there are always going to be arguments (qualifiers) for and against. I'd say this would be true for the probably the last half dozen teams that got in and the first half dozen that didn't. There is no way any Carolina fan could've been pissed if we hadn't gotten in this year (disappointed maybe, but not pissed) but I'm glad we did. Obviously this is wishful thinking and I'm definitely speaking as a biased fan, but I do think we could win a few games. But we could easily lose tomorrow night too..

It's shaping up to be a Dook welfare title. I can feel it coming. You can't rely on Bruce Pearl or Kelvin Sampson in March, and I'm not sold on Florida. Bama isn't quite good enough, and I think St. Johns is the first 2 seed that gets bounced.

I just have to believe Duke hasn't been tested against a really physical team, but Duke's bracket is pretty clean.

Let Duke play the Aggies and they'd have 2 players hurt by the half

Buzz Williams is the modern day version of mid-90's Rick Barnes at Clemson, at least on the defensive end. Offense is a different story. It would take those old Clemson teams the better part of three halves to match A&M's average offensive output.

Duke will be hard to beat. They pretty much have everything you could want on a college team and nobody can claim more talent outright. That Dikembe Mutombo clone in the middle is a hell of an anchor too. Still, by no means invincible.
