The Episcopal Church is an appropriate church for an ambitious young attorney to attend. Staid, dignified, well-heeled. And not too concerned with believing in anything in particular, other than no seersucker or white shoes before memorial day.

Seersucker and summer weight suits (like poplin) can be worm after Easter if you are in the South de to the hot, humid springs. However, I would never break out the white shoes before Memorial Day.

As a Methodist, I must insist that the dress code be followed:

WHITE - may be worn from Easter Sunday to Labor Day.

PASTELS - same as white.

BLACK - only on somber or "high church" occasions.

BLUE (blazer) with GREY (trousers) or KHAKI (if under 35) - default male uniform.

Hats off to the Cardinals for picking an Argentinian as their new pope. Catholicism is thriving in Africa and Latin America, so it makes sense for their new pope to be from either of those two places. Much better than a chubby Italian.

And he's a Jesuit, which means he is probably very smart.

I thought they were just a school within catholicism, kinda like the academic branch, but I thought they were well established and well respected within the church. Not a catholic, but IMVHO, Jesuits are the Special Forces of Catholicism. It's like Jack Bauer becoming President. Smart, hardworking, committed . . . but maybe not the guy you want running the whole country.

It's the History Channel, not HBO. For them, the production value is great.

Not a catholic, but IMVHO, Jesuits are the Special Forces of Catholicism. It's like Jack Bauer becoming President. Smart, hardworking, committed . . . but maybe not the guy you want running the whole country.

That's a very good analogy. Jesuits were founded by Ignatius Loyola - a Spanish Catholic soldier whose wounds ended his military career early. He started the Society of Jesus (i.e. Jesuits) at the height of the Reformation in order to defeat it. He emphasized military-style loyalty to the papacy, high quality education from grade school through grad school, and foreign missions.

The Jesuits have founded countless schools around the world, and took the lead in the conversion of Latin America to Catholicism. They are still huge there, so it is not surprising that Francis is one.

They tend to be Indiana-Jones types with PhD's, not church politicians. They usually do not get very involved in papal politics. The Latin American Jesuits ran afoul of John Paul 2 because they were mixing Marxism and Catholicism. Having experienced the enlightened joys of Marxism in Poland, JP2 shut the Jesuits in Latin America down for awhile in the '80's.

On another note (your comment about Jesuits generally keeping aloof from papal politics notwithstanding), I'm a little surprised that Francis is the first jesuit pope ever, given their long-standing evangelical and educational (not that those two items are mutually exclusive - quite the contrary, actually) outreach, to say nothing of their success in both of those areas...

Finally, it good to have a pope named Francis, b/c now if he does something extreme, we can say "Hey. lighten up, Francis"...

I read the same thing. The Argentinian Jesuits didn't like Bergoglio because he didn't want to go down their Marxist path. So they banished him to the hinterlands. Then when JP2 reigned in the Marxist Latino clergy, the enemy of his enemy became his friend.
