Notice I didn't say 43 million AMERICANS. But let me tell you this... Insurance is a rip off you have to have. The ones who choose to spend our income to care for our families can't any longer afford ro pay for healthy people who choose not to insure their families and the working men and women in this country can't afford what has been shoved through Congress or the state of Massachusetts.

I actually agree with you that every Republican since Reagan has been worse. The problem is that every dem since JFK has been worse. And no Republican has ever added $5 trillion to the national debt in one term. That's historically bad. That, alone, is almost enough to vault Obama to the status of Worst POTUS Ever.

Yes, we both agree that the nation has been going in the wrong direction for quite a while, with both sides of our political duopoly getting worse.

In my experience, checking bags isn't usually that much of a hassle. That's particularly true if you're just flying domestic. International flights can make it a bit more of a fuss.

My biggest problem with carry-ons is that the airlines, as far as I can see, do little to enforce their size restriction policies. I think I've only ever seen one person being told at the gate that their bag was too big. And it was practically a full-size suitcase -- just ridiculous.

Business travelers usually only travel with a roll behind and a laptop for a couple of reasons:

If you have your bag with you, it can't be lost.

If you have your bag with you, you can change flights as needed due to delays/cancellations etc and still have your bag with you.

Biz travelers don't care about the baggage fees because the company would pay for them anyway and/or since they have status they could check for free. So cost has nothing to do with it.

Captures biz travel very well.

What the airlines should do is allow up to two checked bags per passenger for free and charge for overhead bin space. It would make boarding MUCH faster. Of course they would allow those with status to bring a roll on for free and since they board first anyway again it would be much faster and make for more on time departures.

Gate agents are labour. They aren't paid much but they are paid. Charging for bags means less checked bags and less gate agents. It costs an airline nothing if you carry your own bag.

Cost is what matters, not speed. The airlines are little more than buses in the sky. These buses compete ONLY on cost. All the domestic carriers who offered service for a bigger price are bankrupt.

Moving forward...we've got to deal with that poisonous load of debt. Whoever has the best plan for paring down the debt while moving the economy forward should be rewarded with the win come November.
