You voting for Ramaswami, eCat? That's gotta be a hard shrimp to swallow...

This High-Profile Campaign May Be the Ugliest in the Country

The candidates for Ohio governor have significant policy differences, but the campaign ads have been strikingly personal, with exaggerated portrayals of one candidate as a con artist and the other as a drunk.

Of all the mudslinging and smear campaigning across the country in this fraught election year, few races are as nasty as the one for governor of Ohio.

Dr. Amy Acton, a Democrat who was once the state’s chief public health officer, holds a narrow lead against Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican who made a mint in pharmaceutical start-ups, according to a New York Times and Siena University poll released on Sunday.

The two candidates differ significantly on policy matters, but their campaign advertisements, mailers and social media have not all been about substance.

Instead, voters might think one candidate is a con artist; the other is a drunk.

“It’s definitely ugly,” said Christopher Gagin, the former chairman of the Belmont County Republican Party. In past races, he and others said, even hard-hitting attack ads were mostly based on issues or a candidate’s past performance in office. “This,” Mr. Gagin said, “is all very, very personal.”

As is often the case, the campaign attacks in Ohio might be based on actual events, but the sound bites are hardly the full stories. Voters might actually be tuning out all the toxicity.

Dr. Acton, who has faced an onslaught of attacks maligning her as a violent pill popper, is viewed more favorably than unfavorably by voters, according to the Times/Siena poll. Mr. Ramaswamy, who has been accused of making millions by swindling everyday Ohioans, is viewed more unfavorably than favorably, but by a narrow margin not much different from surveys taken months ago.

And there are few signs that the specific nature of the attacks is undermining traditional partisan loyalties.

Despite being painted as an out-of-touch billionaire, Mr. Ramaswamy has a healthy lead among Ohioans without college degrees, as would be expected for any Republican these days. Dr. Acton, painted as scandalously underqualified, has an even larger lead among Ohioans with college degrees, a reliable Democratic constituency.

Still, even if the voters are ignoring them, the ads are unquestionably nasty, especially the ones launched by groups backing Mr. Ramaswamy that aim at Dr. Acton.

“Ohio is not new to negative advertising, but typically that revolves around issues or maybe tying candidates to unpopular national figures,” said Robert Alexander, a professor at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio who directs a statewide poll. “But the personal nature, particularly of those anti-Acton ads, have been somewhat alarming.”

Ramaswamy backers are outspending the Acton camp on advertising by a more than three-to-one margin, and many of their ads have inflated the events of a single night in the Columbus suburbs in late August 2019.

A daughter of Dr. Acton’s called 911 to say that her stepfather and her mother were fighting and that her mother had been “drinking and throwing things.” In an incident report, a police officer who came to the house wrote that Dr. Acton and her husband had been arguing about her long work hours and that in the course of the argument she “grabbed hold of a mirror on the wall and pulled it down,” breaking the glass. The officer wrote that the two had been drinking and that she had taken medication.

The police left and nothing came of it — until it was reported by NBC News this past April. Dr. Acton’s husband, Eric Acton, said in a statement that his wife had a single drink that night and that the argument, which he said he had started, was over before the police showed up. The Acton campaign said the prescription medications were for migraines and high blood pressure. As for the mirror, she bumped into it, knocking it off the wall, the campaign said.

But the incident has become something of a foundational text for a vicious oeuvre of attacks. The state Republican Party has described Dr. Acton as “violent,” and “unstable,” posting computer-generated images of her jeep with a license plate that reads “Drunk Mom” or staring into a broken mirror on which is written, in blood-red lettering, “Mom has been drinking.”

“Amy Acton: Drinking. Drugs. Disaster. Disqualified,” said one ad among many, showing a spilled wine glass, an empty pill bottle and a woman passed out on a couch.

Candidates typically turn negative when they are down in the polls, and the Times/Siena poll has been among several recent surveys showing Mr. Ramaswamy narrowly behind. But, Professor Alexander said, the main problem facing Republicans this year is a discouraged electorate, and it’s unclear that this strategy would fix that.

“Are you really inspiring people with those kinds of attacks?” he asked.

Jai Chabria, chief strategist for the Ramaswamy campaign, pointed out that these ads were from outside spending groups, not the campaign itself, but he defended their content.

“The instances that are described in those ads are factual, and they point to a person who doesn’t have the capability to take on a chief executive role,” he said. “I think it’s completely fair.”

The Acton campaign cited the “baseless lies about her and her family” as the reason Dr. Acton was not going to debate Mr. Ramaswamy.

The Democrats’ counteroffensive has not been as intensely personal, directing its fire instead at Mr. Ramaswamy’s business history and ample wealth. But the hits have been nasty all the same.

Ads have called Mr. Ramaswamy a “con man” and a “swindler,” emphasizing the millions he made pitching his pharmaceutical start-ups and suggesting criminality that authorities have not alleged. One prominent ad features a widower whose wife had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, accusing Mr. Ramaswamy of making “hundreds of millions of dollars scamming people like me.”

(The ad is not dissimilar to an ad from the Ramaswamy campaign, in which a woman says she would never forgive Dr. Acton for the fact that her mother died alone during Covid lockdowns. But an obituary surfaced by a progressive Ohio outlet showed that the woman’s mother died in Kentucky, six weeks after Dr. Acton had left state government in Ohio.)

While the anti-Ramaswamy ad does not make clear precisely how the man believes he was scammed, it is referring to Axovant, one of Mr. Ramaswamy’s pharmaceutical companies.

Axovant, which employed eight people, including Mr. Ramaswamy’s mother and brother, both physicians, was founded to bring to market an Alzheimer’s drug that the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline had given up on after four failed clinical trials.

Mr. Ramaswamy talked up the drug, intepirdine, wherever he could, portraying it as a potential breakthrough that “could help millions” of people. Then, six months after buying the drug, he took Axovant public in a debut that sent the company’s market value soaring to nearly $3 billion.

In late 2015, Mr. Ramaswamy sold off a portion of Axovant’s parent company, Roivant, claiming more than $37 million in capital gains on his tax return that year. In August 2017, he secured another big payday for Roivant when the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank led an investment of $1.1 billion in Roivant, which had a broad portfolio of pharmaceuticals. A few weeks later, intepirdine failed in a clinical trial and Axovant stock plunged.

The Acton camp has framed these events as a classic “pump and dump” that made Mr. Ramaswamy hugely rich while fleecing regular folks in the form of pension funds and retirement investments.

Mr. Ramaswamy has strongly denied such claims, saying if he had held onto the Roivant shares he sold, he would have made money. In an interview with The Times during his failed presidential campaign in 2023, he said criticism of his actions “grates on me a little bit.”

But in the ugly Ohio race, that criticism has taken center stage.

“Vivek Ramaswamy is a billionaire scam artist who pumped up an Alzheimer's drug that he knew didn’t work, gave false hope to millions of impacted families, and cashed out days before the drug failed,” Addie Bullock, a spokeswoman for the Acton campaign, wrote in an email. “Now, he’s running a disgusting smear campaign riddled with ads that have been condemned as ‘defamatory’ and ‘vile’.”

Natalie Harp's first devotion wasn't Trump — it was a hellfire pastor who helped him win. A megachurch pastor who participated in a “multilevel marketing scheme” to help elect Trump and who has been accused of using “unethical” practices to win fame and fortune preached his apocalyptic gospel to a young woman the world knows best as the president’s human “binky,” according to experts, reports and her brother.

Pastor David Jeremiah played a crucial role in pitching a “thrice-married, philandering businessman” to Christian voters while delivering sermons of hellfire to followers who included Trump’s top White House aide, Natalie Harp, sources told Raw Story.

there is an argument to be made that voting for Amy Acton would be a vote for lack of action, because the republicans own a super majority in the Ohio house and she'd never be able to enact any legislation.

but yea, I'll vote for Vivek and it is a hard pill to swallow. He a nepo anchor baby fraud who thinks Americans are lazy

People are losing their shit on twitter about a poll where 89% of boomers said to raise taxes on Gen Z to keep their social security benefiits.

and I totally get it, when I was 40 and they were telling me social security would be insolvent the year I turned 67 and then Rand Paul starts pushing raising the retirement age to 70, means based distribution and it feels like that people our age specifically will be fucked the hardest.

but here is the thing - all these Gen Z who are so intelligently saying that social security is a ponzi scheme and fuck the boomers , they ain't paying shit for them and can't wait for them to die, don't realize that the average American has less than $90K put toward retirement. That isn't just boomers , its everyone in America, and the politicians that told you we needed immigrants to shore up the population decline and contribute taxes? They are all on the government tit to the tune of about 70% - so not only are they not contributing, they are taking now while they are in the prime working age. Add to that there are about 44 million Americans under the age of 59 that are not in the labor force, so the vast majority of them are most assuredly on the government tit.

so while Gen Z can stomp and hold their breath, the reality is that its not just boomers who are going to fight for social security - or some form of income security from the government when they leave the work force because 90% of them will not have money to live - and you take that away and tell them you aren't interested in paying for their lifestyle with your tax dollars, they're going to start burning shit down.

You don't need government. You don't need to burn anything. You need love.

If you didn't save enough for retirement, then sell your house and move into one room of the house owned by your most responsible adult child and become a permanent babysitter for your grandchildren and hopefully great-grandchildren. And OBEY your adult child. Swallow your pride (because you fucked up) and do whatever they say as you live in their home. Submit to the will of your adult child (and the will of their spouse) because you proved that you are still (even at 70 or 80) just a little irresponsible baby who needs someone to take care of them.

The older Gen-Xers are pretty much boomers, politically. Dull-witted, successful, establishment shills. As a younger Gen-Xer, I feel I best represent the troupe. Suspect of both parties. Trump can suck a D, but so can Obama and Biden. All a bunch of lousy cocksuckers and we fully deserve better than all of 'em.

Shiftless and unemployed?
Shiftless IS unemployed. Those expressions are one and the same.

AI will disagree but AI is wrong. The term "shiftless" comes from the union based, industrial age word "shift" as in, you work a shift, 1st shift, 2nd shift, or 3rd shift. I myself prefer to work a 3rd shift, but the professional world does not. So, I am now retired. In 1935, a shift-LESS person is one who does not work a shift, does not have a shift to work. You are unemployed, so to speak.
