They were not invited. Wouldn't want them at all. Blacksburg? Yikes.

I am expecting a Virginia Tech win over Appalachian State. I was not expecting 38-0 at the half. Virginia Tech's offense has actually not played all that well-- David Wilson's been as good as advertised, but Logan Thomas has been hit-and-miss with his decision-making, and Appalachian's 3-4 front has given VT's offensive line some problems. But Appalachian State has shot itself in the foot with a couple of big mistakes that gave VT short fields, and VT's defense and special teams have done their jobs admirably to this point.

One major exception to VT's otherwise excellent special teams performance-- Scott Demler has really struggled when he's been called on to punt. That might be a real problem going forward.

After losing to Jimmy Madison last year - you can excuse Bezerklie for not taking anything for granted.

There are two FBS programs that have lost as ranked teams to FCS opponents-- Michigan and Virginia Tech. You're damn right I don't take those games for granted any more.

VT-ECU was a very strange game, in many respects. VT held ECU to 113 yards of offense, and for long stretched, ECU looked utterly incapable of moving the ball into scoring position. Having said that, VT lost two scoring opportunities due to excellent ECU defensive plays(the Pirates forced a fumble and got an interception on a terrific play by a safety), and it became apparent by the middle of the third quarter that VT was scared to let Logan Thomas throw, and for good reason-- Thomas was indecisive and inaccurate in the passing game, and could have had three other throws picked off. When VT finally gave up on the pass and decided to go strictly with power running, they scored the game-winning touchdown, but VT never had the sort of control of this game that their defensive performance merited. The Conference USA officials helped ECU out a bit-- ECU wasn't flagged once in the game, while VT was flagged twelve times. If you've seen a Ruffin McNeill-coached ECU team play, you know the likelihood of an ECU team going an entire game without committing a penalty is so miniscule as to be all but inconceivable. This was one of those tricky early-season road wins that you're happy to get and hope isn't indicative of future struggles, but Logan Thomas' decision-making ability in the passing game has been very shaky so far.

Clemson 23, Virginia Tech 3

Post by JRB » Sat Oct 01, 2011 9:10 pm

Virginia Tech's defense held on as long as it could, but once again, Virginia Tech's offense is utterly unable to move the ball consistently against an athletic defensive front seven, as Andre Branch flat embarrassed any Virginia Tech offensive lineman lined up against him. This game was eerily similar to Virginia Tech's 2005 home meltdown against Miami, only there were a lot more indicators this year that something like this was coming-- Virginia Tech's offensive struggles against East Carolina and Marshall demonstrated that Logan Thomas just isn't ready. He has NFL size and arm strength, but his decisions are slow, he's not accurate, and tonight he got next to no help from either his coordinators or an anemic offensive line. This was the sort of grinding, defense-oriented win Clemson hasn't been able to get over the last few years, and they got this one convincingly-- if anything, the score shouldn't have been this close.

VT has been the beneficiary of some very favorable ACC scheduling. things will change.

Junior DT Antoine Hopkins is out for the rest of the season due to an ACL tear. Having already lost Kwamaine Battle for the year before the season started, VT could least afford an injury to a defensive tackle, as the backups at that position are true freshmen.

Two injury-depleted defenses have brought about a much higher scoring VT-Miami game than usual, and right now, it looks as if Miami's going to close out an impressive comeback win. VT had every opportunity to close this team out early, but now Miami's offensive line and RB Lamar Miller have taken over. The Hurricanes have shown a lot of fight staying in this one, and they deserve it right now.
