That's probably why he's still alive and kicking in his mid-90's...

eCat wrote: Sun Nov 22, 2020 3:32 am As for the Three Mile Island - Jimmy Carter gets alot of shit for being a bad president, and much of it is deserved - but during the 3 mile island crisis, he went to that plant before it was under control and took a tour. As soon as he arrived they told him that there was a hydrogen bubble in the reactor that posed a serious risk of blowing up if the oxygen levels increased. He said he was there and leaving would send the wrong message - the nation needed to know he had confidence in the people running the plant (which he probably shouldn't have given the background), so he and his wife, along with a reluctant governor of Pennsylvania, toured the plant while it was still releasing radiation.

I doubt any president , maybe short of Dubya, since Carter would have done that, nor Ford or Nixon before him.
Carter was -- and is -- a much better person than we deserve as President. Carter was the victim of circumstances and an ignorant public enamored with the glitz and hubris of a "senile old movie actor" (as my great uncle is reported to have called Reagan in an interview / informal poll with the local paper prior to the 1980 election).

IIRC Carter had a major problem - the misery index was at its highest under him (inflation and unemployment) since WWII.
He had no leadership during the Iran crisis and America went thru an energy shortage where he told Americans to be cold versus an aggressive expansion of our energy production.

You're confusing him being a great person versus being a great president.

That has nothing to do with Reagan, but Carter was a one termer for a reason - Reagan asked a simple question to Americans - are you better off now than you were 4 years ago, and the answer was a resounding no.

RE: "senile old movie actor"

I've never really understood the implication that Reagan was some kind of political novice at the time of his election. He certainly seems to be a relatively standard type of Presidential candidate. Very similar in profile to George W Bush, and to Jimmy Carter himself.

I see pretty much no difference in political chops between Actor>Army>Politician>Governor of California>President and Navy>Peanut Farmer>Politician>Governor of Georgia>President. Describing Reagan that way is not any more realistic than saying Carter was "naive, peanut farming rube" or whatever

Reagan as president was probably to the left of where Biden is today. He certainly wasn't to the right of Biden today. And yet he's glorified as the ultimate conservative, while Biden is labeled a socialist. Interesting...

If he made one wrong move there were going to be 55 dead Americans.

Face it, had the rescue mission succeeded and not bogged down in the desert with the crash, Carter is a hero and a Reagan presidency is far from a foregone conclusion.

Carter inherited the economic issues. Those issues started with Nixon.

Domestic energy production and usage efficiency both increased under Carter and as a direct result of Carter’s policies. Carter appointed Volker to the fed and got inflation under control. Carter started the military expansion Reagan continued, and Carter saw the addition of nearly 10 million new jobs.

If you can tolerate subtitles and can appreciate a Samurai movie as a Chinese western, then I would recommend 3 movies. 13 Assasins on Hulu, 14 Blades on Netflix and The Immortal Blade on Hulu.

13 Assassins is the best, a Shogun son is a deranged lunatic and its determined he has to be killed in order to prevent chaos, so a Samurai is asked to kill him and he puts together a team of assassins to go after him.

14 Blades is about an elite team of warriors trained to protect the Shogun, they are all given a box of 14 swords that each have a specific purpose, they are setup and killed with their leader remaining who seeks revenge. This would be a better movie but they just introduce shit into it without any context as to why. I guess its cultural and makes perfect sense to the Chinese.

The Immortal Blade is a Samurai swears to protect his sister, he fails and in despair is made immortal to walk the earth and live with his pain. Years later he is sought out by a young girl similar to his sister to avenge her fathers death from a gang of swordsman determined to unite China under their rule. Its probably better than 14 Blades but it has that 1970's Kung Fu feel to it.

I found myself turning up the volume when I couldn't keep up with the plot even though I didn't know what the hell they are saying. Those subtitles need to be louder dammit.

What's the difference b/w a shogun and a samurai? It just occurred to me that I am asking you this under the pretense that you are now an expert in these matters just from having watched those 3 movies...

Shogun was the title of the warlord ruler of Japan that controlled the emperor. Samurai was a class of soldier

well I said it was Chinese, not Japanese so I'm already off to a bad start

the last movie was called The Blade of the Immortal, not the Immortal Blade, as if any of you actually gave a fuck

Been watching Yellowstone sporadically all day, Costner's daughter just walked out and Costner says to her "Ah, there's the blushing bride," and Costner's daughter says "Oh dad, the blush got fucked outta me years ago." That's good dialogue...
