Yes people want that. But neither retirement nor health care are assigned to the federal government in the Constitution. And for good reason; both social security and Medicare will soon go bankrupt. Not even the richest country in the world can afford it.- but I still want it to pay for my retirement and healthcare during it.
Education of kids is not assigned to the feds in the Constitution. The states can do that, and are, for the most part. But the cities and states are going a pretty bad job. Imagine how much worse schools would be if they were being run from Washington DC?- but I still want it to pay for my kids education.

I think 29K was the base for being tax exempt. The actual 52% or whatever number it was kicks in after you make your first 1 or 10 or whatever million
I saw something to other day that I thought was interesting and that was the tax rate for business. It could be wrong but essentially the idea was that the tax rate for business was so high at one point that business opted to invest the money into salaries, perks for employees, communities, etc as opposed to just handing it over to the government - corporate philanthropy was huge, and that was also a pressure release valve to this idea that the corporations sole obligation is to maximize shareholder profit. Now you look at the situation we are in and these giant corporations have loads of cash - and its not going to the employees or the government.
Its a novel idea to implement a tax structure that would drive corporations to increase salaries of employees (and executives), pay more for health insurance, child care, build community centers and endow colleges, etc instead of turning it over to the government - especially given that the government isn't getting it now anyways.
The government gets it on the back end because of the employee are taxes for making more income and there is less dependency on local and state governments to fund public works.
That's my idea of socialism

I can see Bernie beating Trump (certainly thought he would've won if he'd been the nominee in 2016) but I can certainly see him getting beat pretty bad as well. But even if he wins, I think it'll be a disaster for down-ballot dems. And then a massive red wave in the 2022 midterms...

I don't agree with these people that want Bernie to win because they think Trump will win in a landslide
The government is spending over 1 trillion a year more than it takes in with record tax revenues - so I have a feeling people are just saying, WTF? if we're going to blow it out, lets blow it out where I benefit from it - lets get a guy in there that is going to give me health care for $250 a month, extend "free" public education to 16 years, give the union people ownership in the companies and let latinos move freely into the country with benefit.
He's hitting every segment of the population. Meanwhile Trump is going to get up there, talk about the economy doing well to his base while 80% of Bernie supporters probably make less than $50K a year and can't relate to 401Ks or capital gains. Trump is going to talk about health care going down on his watch and pre existing conditions - yet I bet no one has had health care costs go down since he took office - at least none of any significance to their daily lives. Trump will talk about lowering taxes but he didn't, they just have to pay it back in April with the next tax tables. Its one thing to talk shit about the size of your rallies or conspiracy theories, its a whole other ball game when you talk about something that people interect with on a daily basis. You didn't bring *MY* health care down, you didn't lower *MY* taxes - and there are going to be a significant number of people that will call him on that.
Whatever opinions I had about Bernis being a bad matchup to Trump has changed. There are a ton of people out there that won't accept status quo from Trump as a campaign platform.
Hell, even Hillary had to address the Bernie people - if you remember she pushed for free community college education and expanding medicare.
Trump will have to walk a fine line of being anti-socialist while at the same time convincing people he's going to improve their lives in some noticeable fashion. Otherwise I think he loses some swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania to Bernie. He'll probably carry Ohio and Florida, but he'll lose out on some western states he think he is going to carry.
now here is the rub for Dems. Bernie will get a fractured party where old moderates hate him and blame him for wiping out their platforms.
if Bernie gets elected - he won't be able to deliver a single damn thing he promised - between existing laws, the Republican senate and the general backlash from moderates within his own party - he'll inherit more or less a stablized country with a solid economy, and in order to bring about the kind of change he wants, he'll need a country on the brink of collapse like FDR inherited.
Bernie will likely be a 1 term president and he'll set the democratic party back 12 years at least by creating demand for a Republican platform. He'll change the democratic party as we know it but the progressives will be powerless to execute a long term vision because of his epic failure to bring about change.
