I don't know what combination of guitar and amp that is, and not sure if it's even Petty or Jeff Lynne playing it, but whoever and whatever it is, they are just fucking shredding it like nobody's business. I've been listening to this in my car and home stereo nonstop over the last few days. Going to miss that ugly bastard.

There's something about Tom Petty that was authentic. He reminds me of the vibe I get from Dylan or the Stones. Flawed. Ugly. Self deprecating. Real. Contrast this to a guy like Springsteen, who was more of an icon. An ideal. A brand. And in terms of songwriting couldn't hold Petty's jock.

Love Tom Petty but this is nonsensical - Petty couldn't write Jungleland, Backstreets, Racing in the Street etc etc etc - and would be the first to tell you so

I will listen to Pre-Born In The USA-Bruce. He had some good stuff early, but then he made pure shit like Dancing in the Dark. That song alone discredits him in this conversation.
