William & Mary Defeats UVA
Updated: Sep 19, 2009 8:53 AM CDT
The first game of the 2009 college football season for the University of Virginia is in the books. William and Mary of the Football Championship Subdivision came to Charlottesville Saturday to kick off the new season.
Fifteen years ago, the University of Virginia football team turned the ball over seven times and beat Clemson 9 to 6. Saturday night, for the first time since that Clemson game in 1994, seven turnovers reared their ugly heads, but the result was much different.
The Tribe recovered four fumbles and B.W. Webb picked off Jameel Sewell three times, including a 50 yard return for a touchdown to put the game away in the fourth quarter as William and Mary beat UVA 26-14.
William and Mary held Virginia’s new spread offense to 268 yards as Vic Hall, Marc Verica, and Sewell all played quarterback. The Tribe scored 19 unanswered points after a Sewell touchdown run halfway through the second quarter. Virginia failed to score the final 37 minutes, with only four second half first downs. The Tribe had the ball over 35 minutes to under 25 for the Cavaliers.
The loss was Virginia's first to a Football Championship Subdivision school since 1986, when it lost 41-37 to the Tribe. It makes four straight season opening losses for the Cavaliers.
Coach Al Groh stated, "Clearly we need some more work on what we're trying to do. We were hoping that this game would be a lot smoother than it was. They had a very good plan. We didn't execute very well. They executed better. Hopefully, having been up there against competition, we'll have a chance to move forward with it."
UVA linebacker Denzel Burrell stated, "You try not to make too many connections between two seasons, different players and things like that, but we have the ability to bounce back, and that's just what we're going to have to do right now. Starting 0-1 is definitely not what we envisioned for ourselves, but we definitely need to just move on from now and just try to get even at 1-1 next weekend."
This is the biggest win in William and Mary quarterback R.J. Archer's career. The Tribe's redshirt senior grew up in Earlysville and starred at Albemarle High School.
In his second career college start at quarterback, he completed 23 of 45 passes for a 184 yards and a touchdown. He also had nine carries for 46 yards. He only threw one interception, the Tribe's only turnover of the game, and it didn't result in points for Virginia.
Archer attended many University of Virginia games at Scott Stadium growing up. He says beating a division one school, especially UVA, is sweet. "You know, any big school in front of so many fans is great, he stated. "But just to have so many friends and family here. It's kind of hard to describe."

Re: Nebraska Cornhuskers
Well at least Nebraska has hoops this year.
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.
