1.) Who said he didn't have a job at UA? While he didn't have a signed contract, he definitely had a financial arrangement, but that doesn't mean you coached at UA. I am good friends with a number of deans and department chairs at UA. They have UA-issued credit cards? Does that make them all football coaches?

2.) see answer to #1.

I need knee surgery. I choose an orthopod out of the yellow pages and decide on a Dr. M. Price. So, I set up an appointment and Dr. Price sees me for some of the prelim stuff (takes a history, gets some pre-op lab work). And we set a date for surgery several months down the road after some physical therapy. The next week Dr. Price is arrested and subsequently indicted and convicted for committing Medicare fraud (and is sent to prison in El Paso).

Because of this, I go back to the yellow pages and pick another doctor. I meet with young Dr. Shula, who redoes the pre-op lab work and sets a surgery date and actually does the surgery (which he botches, the leg becomes infected, and I end up losing it - but that's beside the point).

You see me on the street with my prosthetic leg and my crutches and ask me who my surgeon was, what do you think I would say?

The conversation would go something like this:
You: "Damn, AA, that's rough! I had actually heard good things about Dr. Price. I hate this happened!"

Me: "Dr. Price wasn't my surgeon. He was going to be, but -unfortunately- he got indicted before he could ever take me to the OR. Dr. Shula was my surgeon."

You: "Old Dr. Shula?"

Me: "No, his affable, and incompetent, milk-drinking son who had never ran a surgical practice before - ever."

You: "What were you thinking? Why would you do that? I heard Dr. Stallings volunteered to come out of retirement to temporarily take over Dr. Price's practice until a replacement was found."

Me: "Fuck off. I don't need to hear this shit again."
I saw Dr. Price. I paid Dr. Price for the pre-op work up. But Dr. Price was NOT my surgeon.

LOL!!! Do you own every Spin Doctors album too?

Dr. Price was your doctor. Medicare paid for the first visit. You were comfortable telling friends and family that Dr. Price was you Dr. and he would soon be doing your surgery. You even gave him a down payment for what Medicare wouldn't cover. He was your guy and you were ready to move forward. You met with him every week pre op so he could stay up to date with your status. You still had a few papers to sign to make it official but you just figured you'd do it when you finally showed up for the first pre surgery meeting. But, along the way Dr. Price had a stroke and even though he was still cleared to resume surgery you decided to find another Dr. because the tremors in his right hand made you nervous. Dr. Price understood. Was he not your Dr. Until his health scare? C'mon AA.

Dr. Price was not my surgeon. He was hired to be my surgeon but was arrested before he could do the critical and necessary function to be designated as my surgeon.

The End.

Mike Price was not a head ball coach at Bama. He was hired to be a head ball coach but was fired before he could do the critical and necessary function to be designated as HBC.

The End.

is AA pretending that football coaches do not work, recruit, go through spring practice, fundraise, and represent the university during the offseason?

Ahh, you can't read. Seems to fit your mouth-breathing moron persona. Nice work.

No. AA is not pretending anything. Yes, football coaches recruit (Price did not at Bama), go through Spring practice and whatever. Just like surgeons do histories and preop lab work. However, in my opinion, it is necessary for a person hired to actually coach in a game to be designated the head ball coach. Just like it is necessary for a surgeon to actually do surgery to carry the title.

Maybe you can reread any of the posts where I explicitly spell that out. Like the one directly above your fecal spew of a post.

I don't know what surgeons have to do with this conversation, but if he executed the roles of a head coach during the offseason (recruit, fundraise, appear at alumni gatherings, conduct spring practices, oversee the offseason conditioning program...) then, yes, he was the head coach during that time.

and collected a paycheck for it. thus, he was the coach.

he was NOT the coach come September, due to scandal, etc, etc. but that doesn't magically erase the months he spent as the Tide head coach.

The surgeon thing is a little invention of mine. I call it an ....A N A L O G Y..... Hopefully this new illustrative device will catch on.

As to the rest of your post, you are welcome to your opinion. You see, there is no definitive and incontrovertible set of criteria for what it takes to make one designated as a head ball coach. If in your personal lexicon, 10 weeks of drunkedness and sitting in a golf cart at a few practices in spring is sufficient, well, bully for you. I disagree. When I have as many wins as head coach at Bama as Price, which is zero, I cannot fathom saying he coached the Tide. And despite your legendary intellect and debate skills (rolls eyes), I doubt my mind will be changed.

So, per your logic, Alabama only has a head coach from Sept to Jan when games are actually going on.

then, what are they paying Saban for from Jan to August?

your argument is that Mike Price was never the head football coach at Alabama.

yet you concede that he was an employee of the university.

so, you think his job title was....'Adjunct Professor'......'Assistant Dean'.....?

no, pretty sure he was paid for several months as the head football coach.

I designate Price as the presumptive coach. Coach-elect, or coach-apparent, if you prefer.

You just asked me what I designate him as!

Obviously some people care. Perhaps if you stopped caring, you will have more time to do whatever it is you do and would stop having me explain basic concepts to you.

No, I am not sticking my head in the sand. Price drunk was a better coach than Shula. It is not out of embarrassment of Price that I do not count him as coaching the Tide. It is simply because he never coached the Tide in a single game. Ever. Which, in my opinion, is a critical function of being a head ball coach.

Certainly not the only function, but it is the critical function; and absent that critical function, you are not officially the head ball coach - in my opinion, it is the defining criterion.

And you asked me what I designate him as ....do I need to copy and paste your question?

And I do not ignore your so-called facts. It's just that do not come to the same conclusion.
