How is it a big deal in Scotland if the Brits don't care?
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

Because the Scots care.

Britain is an island. Brits/British are the people there. Scots, English, and Welsh.

This moment in pedantry is brought to you by the 12th man!

While what you say is true, Scots do not identify themselves as Brits, usually.

On a whim I wanted to see if Darios was still there up on Lothian...and a quick Google Map drive around tells me it is. Been over 13 years since I've been there and I still can picture all (well, many) of those drunken nights holding court there and at the Rutland (which was known as the "Slutland" back in the day because anyone could walk out with a hook up if you adjusted your low bar accordingly). Oh the stories I have from my time out there. It was one of those few times in my life I was viewed as "exotic" by virtue of the dearth of people there that looked like me.

"Really, though, what do the Scots gain by secession? I honestly don't know enough to say its fair, foul or inconsequential."

For a man who claims to eschew Shakespeare, that was a nice tie-in...

"It was one of those few times in my life I was viewed as "exotic" by virtue of the dearth of people there that looked like me."

And again (Othello could sympathize)...

Was you other family secret that your grandmother was dutch??
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Heh, I wish I was that clever to pull the tie-in. I'm kinda proud of myself for wandering into it twice, in full ignorance (although the Othello pull is a little bit of a stretch).

That one went over my head. I did have a fling with a Dutch-Chinese photographer chick back in the day. I was not a fan of her shower habits. Standing in the shower and just washing your hair does not a shower make. I'm convinced a large swath of Western Europeans are essentially hippies.

English birds, however, have never offended me.

Was it just you and the wife, or the extended family?

Yes, the Othello was a stretch, but the fair/foul couldn't have been better, given the context. Actually, it may be better for being unintentional...

wife was too busy with work and oldest son in a special summer research program. Went with mother, father, my 4 siblings and most of their families. First time in about 40 years we had all gone somewhere together. Should have brought my 12 year old.

It was great. Had a train wreck on a tour (that we had paid to take) the day before we got to Skagway. Ended up taking 4X4's up the side of a mountain in rain and cold. Food was great, but didn't need to go up the mountain. Skagway great, great discounts on jewelry. Whale tour fantastic in Juneau. Just had a great time with the fam

This did a much better job explaining why I have no real desire to move to Alabama than I did explaining it when AA and I discussed it on here a year or two ago...
