Good stuff. My buddy Howard Brooks grew up in Durham, Stu knows him. Odd case, he went to Carolina but he's a Dook fan (both parents went to Duke). Don't know quite what to make of that, but he does have access to Iron Duke football box tickets, so I've (usually) been able to enjoy watching the Heels smash the Dookies in Durham ever other year in luxury. My other Durham friend is a younger gal named Loring Sullivan. She still lives there. I think her pappy was a doctor at Duke. Just throwing some name out there, I'm sure they wouldn't mind, whether you know them or not...

Gentrification of areas we avoided completely growing up, though I certainly didn’t live in the ‘hoods with the dook doctors. Absolutely astounds me that people are shelling out in many cases upwards of a million dollars to build next to squalor. Not to worry, though. They eventually run them offttt.

The American Tobacco Campus changed everything in Durham. When that company closed, there was literally nothing but an old cafeteria left across the street from where the factory workers went for lunch/supper (site of the current Durham Bulls park). Same thing with the old Golden Belt factory neighborhood. ATC is more corporate/entrepreneurial, while GB is more for the artsy fartsy crowd. I remember going downtown with my brother and oldest niece to eat dinner when she was in high school. We walked all over the area. I told her there was no way in Hell we would’ve been there at her age. It’s not for me anymore, but an incredible transformation. Still, I do miss going to games at the old Durham Athletic Park. My Pop sold drinks there as a kid in the 1940s and early 50s.

first year with a real garden, as like many other people I'm sure, I went overboard on tomatoes and they are all ripe at the moment so I have like two baskets of them on the counter.

instead of them going to waste I decided to make spaghetti sauce with them. We have basil growing in the garden and so I grabbed a health amount of that, along with some purple onions and garlic I bought at Krogers. I ended up making about a gallon of it - I just took all the smaller tomatoes and put them in the blender, and then the larger ones I quartered into chunks.

I took a cup of olive oil and sauteed the onions and garlic, added about two tablespoons of sugar, and added salt to taste in the blender concoction, added in a can of tomato paste, mixed it all together and let it simmer for about 30 minutes to thicken up.

Even if I have to say so myself, it turned out pretty good. We put it in containers and we'll be having pasta for dinner for the next couple of weeks. The wife tasted it and said she liked it better than Rao's.

Unfortunately I'm going to have that many tomatoes ripe about every 4 days around here for the foreseeable future. I'm not into canning so a good portion of them will probably go into the compost.

There is a very controversial murder trial going on right now in the commonwealth of Massachusetts



There is not a whole lot of national news about it, which is unfortunate. Apparently, this mother of 3, allegedly murdered her children. And then she jumped out of the window of their house.

The defense is not making the claim that anyone else murdered their kids. No, their defense is one of SSRIs. They are claiming that the medication made her do it. That is their defense, too many SSRIs. Afterall, why ELSE would this beautiful, young white mother simply murder her three children? There is no other motive.

This case, this may have a HUGE IMPACT on how we look at SSRI medication to treat anxiety or stress or whatever mental illness a person suffers from. Its all about assigning blame. Reading some of the lunatic comments on youtube, it appears some of the blood thirsty shut ins are blaming the fact that she didn't have enough leave from work when she had the babies as that is why she killed them! That is ridiculous, but that is where we are in this time of moral panic.
