so my kid has an Xbox and I decided I'd give this game a shot called RockSmith.

Its kinda like Guitar hero, except you use an actual electric guitar.

For Xmas, my wife got me an Epiphone Les Paul and I started playing it about a week afterwards.

The way the game works, it color codes the strings and highlights the fret bars on a transparent guitar neck on the screen, then the color coded notes stream toward the transparent guitar neck and when they land on the string, you play it - with the idea the color coding tells you which string to play and the fret location tell you where to put your fingers on the fret board.

It starts off with just a few notes in the song and then as your accuracy in playing the song improves, it begins to throw more notes at you until you eventually are playing the entire song. Its starts off with relatively easy songs to play - 1 finger songs so to speak and moves you up to where you gradually have to increase your skill level to be successful. As you work toward harder songs, it introduces new techniques - sustains, sliders, hammer on and pick ups and also has arcade like games to improve your finger dexterity. As you improve your skill set, you unlock features, like simulated amps and footboards, etc.

On the main screen, you can "opt" out of the designed track and just pick any of the songs on the game, about 50 of them, and attempt to play them, or go to the techniques, games and even a chord section where all the guitar chords are listed and grades you on how well you play them.

Another thing that is really cool about it is that since you plug your guitar into the game with a special USB cord provided, then the game will automatically switch the amp settings for a specific sound to match the tone of the song your playing.

I've plinked around with guitars for a couple of years but in the past 3 weeks this game has dramatically improved my ability to play.

My daughter is interested in playing and I didn't want her messing with my guitar so I bought her a Fender strat knockoff on Amazon, so now I have a Les Paul and Fender Strat style guitars to play on.

If you have access to a PS3 or and Xbox and you want to learn to play guitar, for $70, this is a great way to learn.

I promised myself that if I stick with this, then I get to buy a Gibson 335 style guitar.

That's kinda dope. I have an XBOX w/Kinect that we bought for our kids for Xmas. Maybe I'll mess around with that game. I normally don't bother with gaming, but that sounds like time worth spending.
