hedge wrote:Goddamn, if I had a mob outside my door in some middle eastern outpost (or anywhere else, for that matter), I'd be saying anything I could to diffuse the situation, at least until I could get my ass out of there. And since when is an embassy a part of the administration? Yeah, yeah, I know you, being the American tough guy that you are, would've walked right out there into the angriest part of the mob and told them "Fuck off, I'm an American! I have rights and I'm not going to apologize! Fuck Allah! Fuck Mohommed!!" Yeah, right. It's easy to sit here in the comfort of your easy ass life and criticize others for trying to save their ass in what could be a life or death situation (and was in Libya), but I'd love to see you in that same situation. You'd be shitting your fucking pants, not talking big and tough about your "rights" (LMAO) as an American. Just another internet tough guy. As if we needed more of those....
Hedge, according to the articles I read this was NOT when a mob was out there but it was the official administration (re Obama's) position BEFORE the mob assembled and some are saying that may be what provoked them there, because they percieved their apology as weakness.
I wouldn't have said anything, or if I did it would have been what the administration told me to, whether I agreed or not because if I had that post I would have sworn an oath to do what they told me to do.
As for Hillary, just read her stuff she said yesterday I think. She admonished the film maker over and over and over and at the end said "but violence is unacceptable". Basically the same as someone lecturing a rape victim for 2 hours about her dress and then saying "but rape is still wrong".
It is an apology for the terrorists just the same as it is an apology for the rapist, whether the actual word "apology" is uttered or not.
I will have to look for the Obama quotes later when I get home. Don't have time for that now but Hillary has reportedly given three different speaches that apologetic to the terrorists for someone daring to disrespect them.
Not to mention that she called free speech a "tradition" instead of a right.

"I don't want to see anything that implies that we empathize with, sympathize with, or understand the violence that occurred."
I don't feel that making a boilerplate statement (that all politicians make at some point or other) about "deploring hateful speech" (or whatever) even approaches the level of "sympathizing" with the perpetrators of violence. Further, I think trying to fit that square peg in that round hole solely on the basis of divisive partisan politics is as pitiful as it is typical. Not saying that what you're doing, AA, but certainly plenty of others in here and elsewhere are most definitely doing just that. They see shit like this as an opportunity to get their panties in a wad, an opportunity they are always keenly on the lookout for. They thrive on this shit, they crave it. Pretty pathetic...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
I don't think he sympathized, hedge. I think the "we deplore those who denigrate" line was wholly unnecessary and weakened the message, though. It fell short of understanding or condoning the attacks, but it tip-toed nearer to the edge than I am comfortable with.
Rhetoric and partisanship are an indelible part of the landscape. I have R friends who decry the extention of the Patriot Act by Obama who had no problem with it under Bush. And the opposite is true. I have D friends who spoke with great passion about "Bush's" Patriot Act who don't care that it was extended by Obama. How many Rs would have honestly said anything if Bush were president and had bailed out the banks? Etc, etc.
Obama and Romney's responses are the same. Partisans from both sides found grevious fault with party opposite's broilerplate.
For the men without a party, like myself, it is noticeable and funny. For the partisans, not so much.

Gentlemen, to-morrow the Men of Cornell open their grid-iron season against the flamboyant Rams of Fordham. Pray for us. The skies will shudder with the cataclysmic thundering echoes of this awesome spectacle.

This statement was actually delivered by NASA. Now that NASA is freed from its boring role of space exploration, and has assumed the mission of making Muslims feel better about themselves, NASA has deployed its elite, but little known, "Apologize To Muslims" (ATM) unit. All the members of this crack outfit are graduates of the grueling ATM School. They are able to apologize to Muslims in Arabic (including all dialects), Farsi and in Peshtun. The can do so using voice, print, telephone, text, tweet, facebook, fax, video, radio and television media.""The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions," the statement read in part. It went on to say that the U.S. "firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.""
The Middle East Muslims will soon love us. Stay tuned.

Fordham lost to Villanova last week - Cornell opens their season Saturday but won their last two games last season by scoring over a 100 pts. Looks like the Rams have their hands full.Dr. Strangelove wrote:Gentlemen, to-morrow the Men of Cornell open their grid-iron season against the flamboyant Rams of Fordham. Pray for us. Andy Bernard will pull Cornell through.
If I were the JCS Chairman, I would recommend deploying a platoon of paratroopers and about 100 claymores to each US embassy in the Middle East. Maybe a constant AC 130 orbit over each of them too. Obama had better pray one of these outlying Middle East embassies doesn't make him another Jimmy Carter.

yeah, I agree with this. Arm our Embassies to the teeth, make clear statements to the new arab governments as to what we expect out of them and what the consciousnesses are if they don't, and see how they respond. meanwhile Seals and Rangers should be hunting down every motherfucker even remotely related to this shit and burying them alive wrapped in a pig carcass.Professor Tiger wrote:Andy Bernard will pull Cornell through.

I'm in favor of giving the Embassy attackers the maximum opportunity to get their 72 virgins in paradise.

Turns out the filmmaker that prof and BOJ support is Egyptian-born and a felon. He was jailed twice in the late '90s on drug charges, and he was sent to federal prison in 2010 for financial crimes. In fact, the terms of his probation specifically prohibit his promotion of his "film" on the internet, so he may well be headed back to prison.Professor Tiger wrote:This statement was actually delivered by NASA. Remember the guy's name...Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. You may soon see him arm-in-arm with Mitt Romney on the campaign trail, a la Joe the Plumber. If he doesn't have to go back to the Big House, that is. And that'd be a shame, since he's the right's new poster boy for American values and individual freedom.

And now you have the right Rev. Terry Jones, notorious Quran-burning Florida pastor, saying he's been contacted by the filmmaker about promoting the film and is 'considering' the offer.
So far there's been no word from Donald Trump, but it's still early.

doesn't matter. the point is that sub-human scum are willing to kill over a mythical character. Allah has no more basis in fact than Harry Potter. the ARAB leadership (such as it is) needs to at least make an effort to put a stop to islamic extremism. fuck this shit.

What you guys don't seem to get is . . . YOU DON'T FIGHT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO!
When we defeated Germany and Japan, they were developed countries and surrendered because even after losing - they would still be developed countries.
Vietnam? Kicked France out, then kicked the US out despite overwhelming technological defecit because they had millions of desperate, destitute people with nothing to live for and PLENTY to die for. We lost 58,000 troops - they lost 3,800,000, and could have lost three times that amount without quitting.
Iraq? Folded relatively quickly because (despite the Jingoism here), Iraq was relatively Westernized under Saddam and liked having TV, internet, etc.
Somalia? We went in with $64 million dollar Blackhawks against semi-literate herdsmen armed with little better than sticks and stones . . . and left with our tails between our legs.
Afghanistan? Beat back China, beat back Great Britain, shrugged off Russia and - after the longest war in American history - the Taliban still control at least half the country. Remember how we were going to bomb them back into the Stone Age? WE DID . . . and iT MADE NO DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THEY WERE LIVING IN THE STONE AGE BEFORE THE WAR!
You could intimidate the more secularized countries - Turkey, Egypt (under Sadat) - but the rest? Shoot, you nuke 200,000 rock throwers at midnight and there'll be 200,000 more the following Noon.
And remember - they are all looking at us on TV and the internet while their families are living on $300 bucks a year and they have 10,000,000 more reasons to hate us than we have to hate them . . . and they can tell us about tens of thousands of their folks that we killed.
During a press conference later, O'Mara was asked if he had any advice for Zimmerman, and he answered, "Pay me."
