eCat wrote:I hesitate to use the NRA president as a sounding board and I also realize that not having enough votes in the Senate is not the same as defeating a measure, however I do agree with the sentiment of the NRA president when he says this

"The head of the National Rifle Association mocked President Obama's Rose Garden "tantrum" after losing the gun control fight in the Senate, charging Thursday that Obama suffered the worst defeat of his presidency because "he bit off more than he could chew."

David Keene told Secrets that the president and his team misplayed their hand because they don't have a sense of the public's attitude toward gun control. "They just can't gauge the public reaction to what they do because they don't have any sense that the public has feelings different than they do," said Keene.

"He thought and his folks thought that Newtown changed everything. Newtown was a tragedy but that doesn't change people's basic values and feelings," added the NRA president. "What he learned is that he bit off a lot more than he can chew and that you can't just talk your way to a victory. You have to have something that makes some sense and he what he was proposing just didn't make much sense.""

------------
I've said all along that the gun control advocates could never get a clear message - 1 minute they are talking about prevent the Newtown tragedy and then the next they are attempting to introduce legislation geared toward keeping guns out of the hands of felons. The laws they pushed for didn't address the cause they were supporting, and ultimately I think that was the major stumbling block in their gun control effort. Yes, I admit that the public is for better gun control laws, but where it breaks down is when you start asking them "well if we did this, do you think it would help stop these tragedies and even the victims are hard pressed to say they will".

Of course the daily show has really been on a tear mocking everyone but they won't address the basic concept - are we trying to prevent these mass murder tragedies or prevent felons from owning firearms? There is no talk of mental health evaluations so it can only be these two situations. Since Felons don't commit these mass murder tragedies, the two appear to pretty much be mutually exclusive.

I don't think anyone is underestimating the public's feeling about background checks. It's actually quite unprecedented to have this bill fail, considering the overwhelming support for universal background checks. Personally, I think the bill was so thin that the GOP hurt themselves by not letting it go through.

The next time it's lined up, best believe it will be more painful than background checks on buyers at gun shows and the internet. This was not a smart move, tactically, by the opposition.

I don't agree at all.

The public may say they want background checks, but at the same time they are also saying that gun control isn't a pressing concern to them at this time. A recent gallup poll showed that only 4% even thought gun control was a major issue.

My take is until they can come up with some gun control that is effective , its never going to get traction. Not at least until red state democrats are willing to risk re-election to throw their support behind it.

on the one hand you can say that majority of the public is for gun control - but if that is the case then why didn't the Senators vote for it- afterall - re-election is their driving goal here and no matter how much money the gun lobby has, if they piss off their constituents by not voting in their mandate, they are going to lose.

I think what can be said is , as far as the Senate is concerned is that there isn't a majority of States that want gun control, and the push for gun control comes from the most densely populated areas -like Chicago, New York, Washington, etc, who ironically enough already have the most stringent gun control laws in the nation yet still cannot come to grips with lowering gun related crimes.

Obama demanded a vote - he got the vote and now he is throwing a tantrum because he didn't get the vote he wanted.

If you are bat shit crazy and never broken any laws, got into trouble, or been diagnosed with an illness, what good is a background check?

As far as Sandy Hook, the kid that did it used his mother's guns right? So what would have a background check done for this?

I think there has to be something but just throwing money and laws at something doesn't solve it.

Perhaps maybe looking at mental health and spending more money on that would be a good start.

Also maybe gun shows should be heavily regulated meaning unless it is an antique type gun, you can't buy it without going through the proper channels like you would at a gun show.

if there was a real issue with people buy guns at gun shows I'd agree but there isn't one - its just some situation that someone thinks need to be addressed because they see it as a loophole.

Its not like gangbangers are going to gun shows and buying AR-15's. Of the hundreds of gun shows in the United States every year and out of the hundreds of thousands of guns sold at them, I seriously doubt there are 20 incidents of guns being sold to felons that result in being used in a crime. The bottom line is guns that are being sold at guns shows aren't being used in crimes. Are background checks for individual sales going to stop a felon from buying a "black martket" gun? We already have a law against a felon owning a gun, now we need a law that says we gotta double check it?

I'm not saying there aren't people out there buying guns and then selling them to people that are going to use them to commit a crime - clearly a criminal is getting the guns from somewhere, but this isn't happening today in open markets or gun shows.

I don't get that whole felon/gun thing? What about non violent felonies? Can they own a gun? A friend of mine wants to know.

That wasn't one of the two...however, at times like this, it is not time to talk slick to cops. If they tell you to stop and drop, you do it. If not, then you run the risk of being stripped & carted off into a cruiser bare-assed.

I've yet to hear any further details about the naked dude, other than he was arrested and isn't one of the bomb brothers.

I was home at lunch watching ABC News who was going live on the air while the other stations just did their normal program

so they had a "live" banner across the top but they were so desperate to show anything they had a video loop of swat teams driving trucks around on the streets.

I'm amazed the kid has been able to hide this long. You know that helicopter has a thermal camera on it so they are looking in sheds, dumpsters, etc - so that makes me believe he is hiding out in a building with people somewhere.

these two kids are Chechen Muslims. they are following the Koran. they are commanded to kill infidels. they are simply doing what their Holy Book tells them to do.

their motive is Islam, pure and simple. don't say religious extermism, its just ONE RELIGION when acted in an EXTREME WAY we get this shit. fuck everyone else if you think differently
