My mom had a perfectly useable Dell latop with a celeron chip and 1gb of memory. Worked great for her until she started leaving it on at night and Windows Update started loading it up with service packs and important updates. Once that happened it was so frustrating she just gave up and eventually bought a new machine.

If I had reloaded XP on it, gave her a good anti-virus and lets XP update the security issues without loading the bloated SP3, her computer would have been fine for checking email and surfing the net.
I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

I did buy a piece of technology that I've yet to determine if its valuable or not.

I bought a 4gb SD card with built in wifi - which means that I can put it in my camera, take pictures and when I come into range of my wireless network, if I set it up to do so, it will automatically copy the pictures on the card onto my computer without me taking it out of the camera. no cables, etc. It's price was only about $7 more than a regular SD card.

Its on woot today if anyone cares.

"What is the average user going to do? Make a calendar in Word, balance their budget in Xcel, take the redeye out and crop pictures in an older pirated version of photoshop, read some user manuals in PDF, go to youtube, go to CNN, go to ESPN, go to hotmail, play farmville and then use google with the safe search off to find porn and then maybe stream netflix."

Exactly. That describes 90% of computer users (many don't even do all of that), and the thing about getting the redeye out is about the extent to which Stu needs to use "graphics" on his home machine, but no, he needs to puff out his bird chest, preen and prance around proclaiming to anyone who will listen (sadly for both of us, that pretty much means me and no one else on this planet) that he "needs" the graphics package that only a Mac can provide. This is, of course, bulshit - Stu's idea of himself, his burning need to be identified as a high end graphics user, as well as his claim that a basic PC can't do any of the extremely low-level type of graphics/editing that he would ever possibly need to use. Somehow he has let his whole identity get wrapped up in a fucking computer brand. It's sad..

"and lets XP update the security issues without loading the bloated SP3"

How do I set my machine to do that? I think right now it updates automatically, including, I assume, this "bloated SP3" stuff of which you speak. How do I stop that?

I was at the Goodwill the other day, saw a very nice Brooks Bros. blue blazer, great shape. Tried it on, it was a good fit except for it was clearly for someone who weighed about 40 lbs. more than me, all in the gut. But it fit good thru the shoulders, sleeve length was right, all that. So of course I thought of Stu, since that "40 lbs. more than me, all in the gut" is an exact description of him (otherwise we're virtually identical in proportion), and bought the coat to give him. It's a $250 blazer new, I took it over to him, he gives me a t-shirt in return. Goddamn it!

Speaking of technology, I bought a Brevelle (sp?) juicer a few weeks ago, it was on sale for like $40 or some shit, I already have 2 Jack LaLane juicers and a Champion (which I haven't used in years). Man, this thing is way better than the Jack LaLane. I think I remember eCat saying he got one awhile back. I love this thing...

with an i5 processor and 4gb of RAM, you don't need to worry about it.

download and install these 3 programs.

Microsoft Security Essentials
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... essentials
Malware Bytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
cCleaner
http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=mncol;1

you won't need to run cCleaner for about 6 months from now

Breville is the shit.

Its not as heavy duty as the Champion but you also don't lose half the fruit or vegetable when you run it thru the juicer.

I plan on using photoshop cs5 pretty extensively, and continue drawing my stupid pictures. Also doing some web design. Mac OS comes with Apache and MySQL already ready to go. Not a big issue for comparison but my laptop is also my bedroom TV (via netflix/DVDs/Hulu/HBOGo)

I downloaded Security Essentials and Malwarebytes first thing (on your suggestion some years ago). Haven't seen the eCleaner yet, though. What is it?

I hate laptops. I try to use those infuriating things and I feel like Pap Hizzy trying to figure out the remote control to the new satelite dish. I'm old but not that damn old.

also, hedge keeps mocking my need to run "graphics" programs but he didn't sound that way last month when he pleaded with me to make an ad for his parents' 50th anniversary and run it in the paper. no sir, he was full of fawning and begging back then.
