From the article: "Nine NFL players were arrested on domestic assault charges in 2005, Paul Tagliabue’s last full year as NFL commissioner. Among those nine arrests, Hopkins’s single-game penalty was the only suspension the league handed out that year. The following year, Tagliabue was succeeded as commissioner by Roger Goodell. Domestic violence is not a new problem in the NFL."
Not much excuses domestic violence, but (according to google): "Each NFL team is allowed to have 53 players on its roster (plus a five-player practice squad). As of 2011, the NFL has 32 teams, making a total of 1,696 players. According to an estimate by Plunkett Research, the average NFL player salary in the 2010-2011 season was $1.9 million."
9 arrests out of 1696 players is about one half of one percent of the players getting charged with domestic violence. If the stats are to be believed and one in four women (or whatever it is) is a victim of domestic violence, it looks like the NFL is doing a far better job than society as a whole...
