I don't know all the story, he got drunk one night at a honky tonk in Arkansas, got shit faced to blackout levels (which was not uncommon for him at that time), and woke up with a paper saying he was married to this woman who he claimed he never met before. I would assume she was of the barfly variety. Had to get it annulled.

He did her a favor, she thought she may have trapped him but she had no idea what she signed up for. He wasn't something he ever talked about, Mom would bring it up when they would fight. We actually talked about it again maybe 6 months ago when I was spending time with her. She laughed about it in later years.

He has a handful of stories from his Arkansas days. He was glad to see that state in his rearview mirror.

Two cops did a stick dance on his head and kept him in the jail all weekend when he should have been in a hospital.

Another time he woke up in a hotel room and blood was all over the bed. He didn't know if it was his or someone elses. He told me he thought he puked up blood from drinking bad whiskey but that had never happened before or since.

It wasn't a thing in 1949 because 1/2 the men under 35 in the country had it. It was normal.

Sounds like the old man got dealt a tough hand. Not sure if that excuses his behavior but maybe it does. You turned out alright, maybe that was in spite of him but maybe at least some of his hardassery played a positive role in molding you...

dad took a pearl handled revolver of a dead Japanese soldier, Lt Colonel demanded he give the gun to him, Dad thought a better option was to punch him in the face and steal his jeep.

To make matters worse, he took the stolen jeep to his Phillipino Girlfriends village and when the MPs arrived they saw all these phillipino women wearing army shirts and eating army food, so they then realized the old man (and two other guys) were the ones raiding the army supply trucks and taking the stuff to the women who in turn would screw their brains out. The old man went native, I've seen a picture of him wearing a loin cloth with two big tittied topless Phillipino women on each side of him and he has the biggest shit eating grin.

I have his court martial transcript at home. He would have got a harsher sentence but his war record and his status saved his ass. I think he was sentenced to 12 years, but Truman pardoned him in 45 and he got to go home.

oh man, his childhood is the stuff of horrors.

His dad got shot when he was 6 by the sheriff for fucking the sheriff's wife, mom left alone to raise 5 boys, they lived in abandoned houses and used newspaper to fills the cracks in the walls. His oldest brothers would hop on coal trains as they went by and throw coal down on the ground for them to pick up to heat the house.

Mother married a dairy farmer who wanted the boys as slave labor , the oldest brother got word of it - he had moved on in life and was a Marine, had to come back home, beat the shit out of the man and pack up the mom (against her will) to get the boys out of that situation.

Next marriage, the guy was a drunk but he was ok with the boys. Used to ride a horse into town to get drunk because the horse knew the way back home. Dad told me once the old man came back on the horse and it bucked him off into a ditch and he hit his head one something - a fence post or whatever, and he was laying there moaning with blood gushing out of his head. Him and his second youngest brother who was a teen by now were there. He asked the brother - is he gonna be alright? The other brother response was "I don't give a damn one way or the other" and they left him in the ditch. Next day the guy was out working the farm like nothing happened. That man grew cotton so the boys picked cotton by hand for several summers. I remember him taking us to one of the cotton fields he picked one time when we went to a funeral.

I got stories man - all day long.
