We started 529's plans for the kids when they were born.
Back in the day you could actually buy college credit at whatever the going rate was, so I ended up buying 2 semesters of college for the boy
By the time the daughter was born you couldn't that anymore so you just dumped money into an investment portfolio.
Anyways, of course with the daughter going to Bama we burned thru hers pretty quick but I kinda forgot about the boy's.
Also we'd get some weird statements from them like once every 3 years that showed we had only a fraction of what I thought we had put into it so I kind of put it out mind. I just figured we chose poorly and the fund tanked in 2008 and never recovered.
Ok so now you probably have guessed where this is going. The daughter had to finish up a class at the local community college and I have been doing a slow burn about having to pay a couple of thousand because she didn't want to take it at Bama. It hit me that maybe I could transfer money from the boy's account (because God knows that kid ain't going back to college anytime soon) so I logged into the account for the first time in 5 or so years and realized he's got a nice little nest egg there. I have no idea what those statements were telling me - maybe that was some formula for money left over after college credits.
I guess I'll keep whatever is in there available to him should he decide to go back to college when he is 30 but I'm happy that I get reimbursed from paying cash earlier this year for the daughter.
Another thing we did was we bought a shitload of Series E savings bonds (or EE, whatever). I guess I didn't realize those damn things take like 20 years to mature. I'm sitting on a Toyota Camry in bonds but I'll be retired by the time they pay off. I would just tell relatives instead of Xmas gifts , just buy the kids savings bonds. That went on for 10-15 years. I'll be so senile I forget about them too.
Got to love scenes from the only Bond movie that was a pure Blaxploitation film.
Sadly, I believe my boat is as old as that one.

Coincidentally, that guy's voice in the video where the parole officer pulled him over kinda reminds me of the sheriff (J.W. Pepper) in Live and Let Die....
