They do in NC when you buy over a certain amount. You have to acquire a special "license" to buy that much at once, and they document everything.eCat wrote:thats a pretty big leap.crashcourse wrote:so the whole lesson from newport for the progunners is we need more guns--arm the teachers or lets have security guard in every school who is armed. and registration is illegal. You have to have ID in this country to buy liquor, you have to have ID in this country to buy a plane ticket, you have to reguister to vote, you have to register for the draft
but lay off of people who buy guns and ammo having to register or become publically known. and lord knows the police force, military and government are all threats or could be threats so I need to be armed to face them
gotcha
When you show ID to buy liquor, they don't write down what liquor you bought and how much, and I don't see anyone clamoring for checks to see if someone is an alcoholic before they are allowed to buy liquor - so what lessons have we learned from the 16,000 people that die from alcohol related auto fatalities each year?
That the liquor lobbyist are too powerful in Washington?

Re: Florida State Seminoles
I am not antigun
if given a choice between banning "assaullt" rifles and banning violent video games I'd rather ban violent video games for kids under 18
it does crack me up the majority of gun owners have no intent using > 10 round clips and "assualt weapons except maybe once in a blue moon' are so enraged that their weapons muight be taken away
meanwhile the NRA and its backers the arms salesman are laughing all the way to the bank. the panic has vaporized all stockpiles of rounds and weapons. buddy of mine must hav bought 10 pistols/rifles since christmas. we are now having monthly gun shows.
doubtful any changes on assault weapons or high capacity clips makes a difference
except on the homicide rate of kids 6 and 7--that rate skyrocketed last year.
and while most of the american public thinks we should do something our do nothing congress will again do nothing
I know action of any sort probably means nothing but inaction just highlights how impotent we are to do anything these days about anything except increase the debt, increase the paranoia, increase the number of rounds and weapons on the street and increase the fear in kids that going to school can be hazardous to your health

Re: Florida State Seminoles
some tidbits from the Newtown shooting
-----------------------------
"Adam Lanza, the suspect in the suburban Connecticut elementary school shooting rampage, tried to purchase a "long gun" rifle from a local shop but was turned away because he did not want to wait for the required 14-day background check, law enforcement sources said Saturday."
When Adam Lanza left the house, he took a Bushmaster .223 rifle and two handguns -- a Glock 9-millimeter and a Sig Sauer semiautomatic, law enforcement sources said. He left the rifle in the back seat of his mother's car, which he used to drive to the school. Both handguns were fired in the attack, sources said.
---------------------------------------------
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/dec/15 ... e-20121215
someone tell me again how registration and banning assault rifles would have prevented the Newtown shooting
if we are serious about stopping homicides with guns, then lets address the problem - felons and crazy people - neither of which should have access to guns and all of the public agrees on.
Do we need 30 round clips for Glock 9mm? I can't imagine why. Would reducing it to 10 stop felons and crazy people from shooting innocent victims? No. Would it stop multiple people from getting shot if they wanted to do so? No.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
Video games are already labeled - and it's parents who buy them for little Johnny, even if it has a rating of "M".
Every non-revolver pistol I own has a clip that holds 10 or more rounds. I am protective of gun rights. Don't know if that qualifies me as "so enraged" or not. As far as seldom using the so-called assault weapons, I guess that's true. I don't plan on reading "50 Shades" but that doesn't mean I think it should be illegal.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
I understand the 14 day waiting period. I'm not happy with it but it isn't about a background check, its about eliminating any intent where a gun purchaser needs the gun immediately. But as an individual selling a gun that is an undue burden on me.
My take has been that this should be a binary process. Yes you can buy a gun, no you can't, and you have a simple , effective means of checking it. I'd even be in favor of gun shows having some process where its very, very easy for me to sell a gun to another person that involves the binary yes, you can, no you can't. If that existed, I'd fully support steep fines or even jail time for people who sold guns without the check ..again, as long as it wasn't an undue burden on the seller. This whole idea of going to a GMV office with a gun title or whatever similar to a car is absurd. At that point its a revenue generator for our government, not a process that is in the interest of public safety.
What gun I'm purchasing or selling is irrelevant. There aren't types of guns that a felon of mentally ill person can own. Its a binary process.
You won't prevent crimes of passion, but then again, would preventing a person from buying a gun really stop them from attempting to hurt someone in a premeditated act? If they have the presence of mind to go purchase a gun with the intent of killing someone at a later date, they'll aren't just going to so, oh well, I can't buy a gun, fuck it, let bygones be bygones.
You won't prevent a non-felon or someone who isn't registered as mentally ill from getting a gun and going on with whatever they are going to do with it. And as horrible as this sounds, that is the price of a free society. I hate it that it happens but its going to happen if you agree that you aren't anti-gun, even if you think there should be limits to what kind of guns should be available to the general populace.
And as I said before, I also fully support steep penalties for anyone that makes a gun accessible to a felon , juvenile or mentally unstable person. Its as bad or as worse than giving your keys to a drunk. You can't buy a new handgun today without a cable lock. Its part of the purchase now anyways.

I think there is value in discussing it among reasonable people. Especially if the gap is pretty big on both sides.AlabamAlum wrote:BTW, if I comment on this topic again, someone kick me in the nads. We're wasting each others' time.

You're right, this is taking away from potentially fruitful and conclusive conversations about politics, religion and UNC vs. UK basketball...

Re: Florida State Seminoles
if the Daily Show has taught me anything, its that a white guy shouldn't be saying what MLK would believe if he were alive today ( if you're wondering find the video of the guy talking about MLK supporting gun owners rights or the wall street occupiers refusing to let John Lewis speak because he was a 'professional' protestor )
but this cracked me up

Re: Florida State Seminoles
my gun views have evolved since the initial shock that first week
listening to huckabee show ---him and a congressman from nevada talk swayed it even more for the progun
You really do have to be mentally ill or enraged outside your normal personna to start blasting people --how those people got that way and treating them should be #1 priority
#1-its just to damn easy for those types to get guns though
#2 the rationale that the public needs to have the right to bear arms--any and all types--to the extent the police and the miltary has is just ludicrous to me. I dont see how constitionally we are letting joe schmo arm himself in anyway he sees fit because his right as a citizen allows him to determine govenment tyranny and form his own little militia to stop it.
#3 watching the good citizens snap up all the weapons and rounds they can --big money NRA groups and weapons manufactures must love these crisis to seel out and fatten their wallets
ok I'm done no more gun talk
