so the whole lesson from newport for the progunners is we need more guns--arm the teachers or lets have security guard in every school who is armed. and registration is illegal. You have to have ID in this country to buy liquor, you have to have ID in this country to buy a plane ticket, you have to reguister to vote, you have to register for the draft
but lay off of people who buy guns and ammo having to register or become publically known. and lord knows the police force, military and government are all threats or could be threats so I need to be armed to face them
gotcha

thats a pretty big leap.
When you show ID to buy liquor, they don't write down what liquor you bought and how much, and I don't see anyone clamoring for checks to see if someone is an alcoholic before they are allowed to buy liquor - so what lessons have we learned from the 16,000 people that die from alcohol related auto fatalities each year?
That the liquor lobbyist are too powerful in Washington?

We definitely need more sarcasm in the debate.
I'm not a fan of arming teachers. I don't think guards are a bad idea; many schools have them already. Economics are the issue there.
Most states have some sort of background check now, there are holes, though, in some states.
I trust the average cop with a gun every bit as much as I trust the average citizen - neither of those groups are a problem. I do have an issue with restricting guns further to law-abiding citizens because of the actions of the mentally ill or criminals. Just as I have an issue with restricting booze further because some people abuse it or drive cars while under its influence.
As far as the possibility of a government turning, there are examples. You can find German, Italian and Spanish seniors who can speak on it first hand. Is it possible in America? Without a doubt. Is it probable? I personally don't believe it likely, but it is not impossible.
But I think eCat was right: debate on this topic will bear little fruit.

how about this, we ban automatic transmissions and make everyone drive manual
that way, drunks will have a hard time having to shift and won't kill as many people. And any transmissions with more than 6 gears is also banned. No one needs more than 6 gears

Manuals are more difficult to drive drunk?

Yes.

We actually have put laws on the books to significantly reduce the amount of deaths related to drunk driving. That result was due, not to reducing alcohol content or types of alcohol sold, true, but through legal penalties on people who do not drink responsibly and people who enable people into irresponsible drinking.
So, maybe that's where things go, then. Maybe we do not allow private sales anymore. Maybe those who go through private sales and claim theft will be subject to tough penalties for doing so. That, along with "authorized sales" parameters can be effective.
Again, I don't know. I do know that there has a be a solution that addresses the problem we have today.

I guess I can understand an incremental difficulty, its harder to time the shift perfectly just like its harder to stay perfectly between the lines, but I dont think a manual is some sort of big issue for a drunkard who is used to driving a manual. I can see that it might be nigh imposible for a drunkard used to autos to suddenly drive a manual though.

I'm okay with making punishments more severe for those who do not handle guns responsibly. Hell, in many areas they're already harsh. Plaxico did two years in prison (ostensibly) for shooting himself in the leg.
The average citizen who owns a gun never has a problem. My issue is that we already have several thousand gun laws on the books now as a response to idiots, criminals and crazy people. I don't like gun rights lessened because of those people anymore than I would like the government restricting Internet availability because pedophiles like chatting up kiddies on-line. Punish them, not me, through further restrictions.

aTm,
Your gross motor skills are impaired and you lose access to so-called 'muscle memory'. Look at a badly drunk person try to even walk. Driving a stick would result in less acceleration through clutch-shift coordination and there would be more stalls.
Therefore, driving a manual transmission is 42.66% (repeating) times harder when drunk than driving an automatic. This, sir, is FACT. Incontrovertible fact. And I'm tired of you trying to make stick shift drivers WHOLE.

The simple answer to drunk driving is interlock systems. They'll be standard on new cars in 10 years Im betting.

Stick shift drivers are higher functioning drunks than the general population.

if I tried to drive a stick shift drunk, right now, I would stall all over the place
if I practised driving stick for a year then got myself sloshed & slizzurr'ed.... I'm pretty sure I could fuck shyt up really good

I want to ban auto transmissions! If I have to ally with MADD to get it done, then let that unholy alliance commence!

Hated stick shifts. They always got in the way of road bjs. I'd try & shift & I'd pull out her hair. I can understand how you would like them though aTm.
