Yes this is one of the many reasons why we needed to elect Mitt Romney and how this country fucked up by not doing so. The ATF is a Federal Agency staffed by morons no smarter than your average postal worker. It needs to be disbanded and right quick because it serves no real purpose anymore. But our elected congressmen would never cut funding to it (to zero wehere it belongs) because many of the people who work those jobs, they are like postal workers in that they are functionally incapable of doing anything else. They lack any real cognitive ability. So the jobs in that agency are just appointments made by Federal Beurocrats to brain dead people in exchange for votes, elsewhere.

Basically, the ATF is the WPA.

Yeah, Mitt would have saved the day. Also, if we would have elected Al Gore we wouldn't have been in 2 wars, the Towers would not have been hit and the Jon Bon Jovi would still be alive today.

They Daily Show did a good segment last night contrasting how we have 20K gun laws on the books and how congress has effectively neutered the ATF from enforcing them.

Stewart has some valid points but what he didn't mention , and I'm sure he knows, is the public's distrust for the ATF after Ruby Ridge, Waco and most recently the Fast and Furious gun scandal.

For whatever good the ATF does, their history of badly overstepping their boundaries has forever broken the trust they have with the public, and by extension, Congress.

That is why we don't even have an acting ATF director - because a congressman was able to put in legislation that gave congress the ability to approve or shut down the presidential appointee. They were gutted of their ability to audit and track gun purchases because they continually created sting operations going after gun store owners instead of going after guns used in crimes.

If there is an issue with guns in America due to not having laws enforced, it lays squarely at the feet of an over aggressive ATF, much of which stems from the direction of the man in drag Janet Reno. Instead of respecting second amendment rights, they took the attitude that law abiding citizens need more oversite and bureaucracy to purchase guns, as if they were the reason felons had weapons.

I also heard some background on the 1986 machine gun ban and how it forever affected how aggressive the NRA was going to be regarding any potential gun control legislation. Essentially the administration and lobbyist badly underestimated how gun owners would react to having machine gun purchases banned and used the machine gun as a bargaining chip to limit future gun control laws for all other guns. Congress rushed thru the legislation with an oral vote in the last 3 minutes of the session leaving the NRA to answer to its members about opening the door to gun control (via machine guns) in exchange for squashing legislation that would inevitably be re-introduced later on. Lesson learned - a new round of congressmen will attempt to introduce more gun control regardless of what you have given up in the past.

So we have a very strong lobby with many congressmen on their side that will not give an inch in regards to keeping guns out of the hands of Americans and an enforcement agency that are such zealots about keeping guns away from Americans they have multiple instances on innocents blood on their hands. Both of which create an environment where gun control has very little common ground for opposing sides.

I heard about 1986 on NPR last night. Even Lapierre put his approval on it back then because he felt very few people actually owned machine guns. He underestimated the backlash of NRA members who thought they were sold out.

I'm saying you can't argue a negative.

A troubling oversight has been found within New York State's sweeping new gun laws.

The ban on having high-capacity magazines, as it's written, would also include law enforcement officers.

Magazines with more than seven rounds will be illegal under the new law when that part takes effect in March.

As the statute is currently written, it does not exempt law enforcement officers.

Nearly every law enforcement agency in the state carries hand guns that have a 15 round capacity.

Burlington’s mayor and the police department are using the same word to describe a Lamoille County firing range’s edict that city officers are unwelcome to train there in a dispute over gun control:

“Unfortunate.”

Reached Thursday evening, Mayor Miro Weinberger told the Burlington Free Press that the ban on city police use of the facility is “an unfortunate response to the beginning of a process by the City Council to attempt to protect Burlington’s children and community.”

Said Burlington Police Department Deputy Chief Andi Higbee: “It is unfortunate that this important and much-needed community dialogue regarding gun control currently under way in the City of Burlington and across the Nation has resulted in this action.”

At issue is a decision this week by the Lamoille Valley Fish and Game Club Inc. to order a halt to Burlington police officers’ use of the Morrisville facility. The action is a response to the City Council’s advancing a measure to ban semi-automatic rifles and large-capacity magazines in Burlington.

The City Council’s action threatens constitutional freedoms, Robert Boivin II, board chairman, wrote in a letter to the police department and to city and state leaders.

Thet letter, dated Tuesday, was obtained Wednesday by the Burlington Free Press, which broke the news of the expulsion on its website Wednesday night.

The club’s executive board “can no longer support the City of Burlington with such a prejudice against our club and its members, and has voted to suspend the City’s use of our range for its law enforcement. This action is effective immediately,” Boivin wrote in the letter.

“We hope that the council reconsiders its actions and redirects its efforts towards perpetrators of violent crimes and security issues,” Boivin continued.

The city’s exclusion from the range likely would affect how and when officers train with firearms, Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling told the Free Press on Wednesday night.

We need to disarm cops.

That move is just idiotic.

I said it tongue-in-cheek specifically because so many wish to point to the UK's gun laws as a model - and as you know, the average English cop does not routinely carry a weapon.

There are bad cops out there. Crazy, mean, evil...whatever. Some of these crazy cops have shot people they shouldn't have. Something has to be done! If we can save just one life, then it's worth it.
