I have that movie, I'll have to watch it, although being in black and white, I'm not sure how much of a connection I can make to the area.
I thought it was funny that so many people drive this road they have photographers set up on the side taking pictures. After about the 4th one I drove by, I grabbed my wifes boob for the next one.

That's dangerous. 10 and 2, eCat.
Next time, let me know, I'll stay in the back seat and double palm those puppies for you. I will need to and from airfare, though. I'm not into that deep woods camping shit. My tastes angle more to beach locales and customs.

my kids love the beach, I've always been a mountain person.
Matter of fact we love it so much we're seriously discussing what our options are for moving to Knoxville in 6 or 7 years when we are empty nesters. The original plan was North Carolina but every son of a gun has the same idea and Carolina's population is exploding.

Yeah, a sea scape relaxes me infinitely more than any woodland vista would.

maybe if I was in some open air bungalow with a cool breeze coming off the ocean and a boat drink in my hand I'm good to go, but I'm at a point in my life where laying on grit, cooking myself to beet red and getting salt in my dickhole while I try to avoid being swept out to sea by the current is not my idea of a good time.

I could easily live in Asheville. I think it's the coolest city in NC. Great mountain setting as well.
My wife loves the beach. Even though I prefer the mountains, the tax havens closest to U.S. have beaches so I'll adapt come empty nester time.

Last week on vacation, we stopped here for lunch. Now, this would be the life for me. the accommodations attached are a little too rustic for the mrs. but just having a bar/restaurant to give you shade and nourishment just steps from a noncrowded beach would be okay by me.

I'm finally spending 2 weeks at the place I bought last January in Hilton Head starting Saturday. The Holiday Inn has a great outside bar just a few doors down. Milfs everywhere.

I love the beach. Rum drinks, scantily-clad women. Sunshine. Golf. Rum drinks. Etc.
That said, I'm looking at buying a cabin near Gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg/Sieverville/Pigeon Forge sucks ass.

I will defer to you as the expert on sucking ass.
But I love the trails and hiking in that area. I can't imagine anyone who hikes Le Conte thinking it "sucks ass." If you're talking about the touristy areas, well, yeah, they are what they are.

I spent a week there, on short notice, when a Hurrican Gustav forced a change of plans from a week in Gulf Shores. Best part of the trip was the day spent in Asheville.
