the cerebral thinkers want to put the finale (or the season as a whole) focusing on him and his wife's driving desire to create a narrative that wasn't there - fake news

and the people that expected an ending like the first one (I didn't watch more than 2 episodes of the second one) would be frustrated that there wasn't any closure

and then the vietnam flashback was just out of nowhere to end it to me. I took it to mean that he finally gave into to dementia, that closing out the case was the only thing keeping him semi lucid

but I'm horrible at getting these types of references.

I remember in Classic Lit in college we had to read this book about a guy trying to tame a wild dog by starving it and then feeding it, and then he used the dog to hunt bears.

Turns out the book was a metaphor for modern religion and I'm like all mad because I wanted to talk about why he had to starve a dog. I remember people in class were like clearly this is about the influence of modern religion on society and I'm over there in my Bocephus 3/4 length T-shirt like ....yea....clearly

Fuck Classic Lit and that antique collecting bitchass professor

"the cerebral thinkers want to put the finale (or the season as a whole) focusing on him and his wife's driving desire to create a narrative that wasn't there - fake news"

Had not thought of that, but at the same time, if you're going to go that route, I guess it was fake news that the DA closed the case (twice, heh) on what they thought was rock solid evidence, so in a sense, both those ostensible closures were fake news...

"and then the vietnam flashback was just out of nowhere to end it to me. I took it to mean that he finally gave into to dementia, that closing out the case was the only thing keeping him semi lucid"

Hadn't thought of that either, but that's pretty on point. See, you could still be an antique-collecting bitch-ass comparative Lit professor yet...

"I remember in Classic Lit in college we had to read this book about a guy trying to tame a wild dog by starving it and then feeding it, and then he used the dog to hunt bears."

Was that Big Red? Anybody remember that book? It was geared towards pre-teen readers, but I figure that's probably what they're teaching in Comp-Lit college courses in Kentucky...

""the cerebral thinkers want to put the finale (or the season as a whole) focusing on him and his wife's driving desire to create a narrative that wasn't there - fake news""

You could also use this line of thinking as a parallel to some folks thinking Trump is really a great deal-maker, that he's 5 steps ahead of the other guy so that what seems to be happening (kids abducted/killed) is just a set-up for much more complex and hidden events (secret cabal of local rich and powerful purveyors of child porn and sex slavery), but in the end he's just an idiot and everything is just so obvious you can't believe it actually happened that way, b/c we have a need to create mystery where there is none (kid slipped and fell, grieving lunatic mom takes other sibling as replacement for lost child)...

Granted, grieving lunatic mom abducting a kid as a replacement to a lost child isn't necessarily an everyday event, but it's not as lurid as the local cabal of rich and powerful purveyors of child porn and sex slavery. Maybe the whole thing was a commentary on our need to believe a lurid motive (Russian collusion, secret piss tape, porn star payoffs - well, that last one actually did happen, but who cares?) rather than an obvious but unexciting truth (Trump is literally an 90 IQ moron without any filter whatsoever)...

I just read an article where AT&T just forced out the head of HBO because he wouldn't adopt a Netflix mentality of cranking out content , regardless of mediocre or retreaded it is.

This means that its unlikely you'll see quality stuff like Game of Thrones (which costs about $15m an episode), True Detective, Sopranos, Deadwood, Boardwalk, etc

Also it means that HBO will get away from having a large movie library. Essentially AT&T believes (because of its merger with Time Warner) that it needs to copy netflix in order to keep and attract the cord cutters that are killing Time Warner.

The thing is though, HBO currently has as many subscribers as Netflix, albeit the majority are still part of a cable system subscription.

The article stated and I agree that if HBO goes away from the high quality content and pushes to crank out quantity over quality it will lose people in droves.

I don't know. Quality is in the eye of the beholder. I'm thinking that as things continue to refract, Honey Boo Boo will have a lifelong career. Things fall apart, the center cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...

I guess the concept is, do you want to be a creator or just a library. I mean, you can find a free version of almost any movie if you try hard enough, so there doesn't seem to be much juice in that. But if you can come up with some show, no matter how shitty (but maybe some good ones too) that capture an audience, you keep the revenue flowing. It's kinda like the Grateful Dead, just keep touring, i.e., providing new content (or refurbishing the old content in a new way) and getting new fans, rather than rely on your back catalog and hope that the next generation buys your albums from 50 years ago rather than latch onto the new trends, which seems unlikely at best...

I'm watching this Michael Jackson documentary on HBO. Its very slow moving, alot of filler, but holy hell - I guess I never put much thought into it, but its uncomfortable to watch how he's grooming these kids and their parent to molest them.

so one eyed man is the only one left who knew the story
along with the two detectives who finally figured it oiut
son was screwing the interviewer wasn't he? screwing someone the dad figured out
not sure who the daughter was telling not to pursue her anymore--I guess hoyt or harris--don't know how she wouldn't have not recognized Purcell as her dad
mom who sold the daughter is meryl streeps kid I think
was purcell killed in the pink room
hoyt is dead by then but after his confrontation with hays he just fades away holding over hays that he knows where harris is buried in exchange for keeping it a secret that they kidnapped/bought the daughter
agree hayes retreated into his Vietnam solitude

whether dad committed suicide or not is the only lingering question to me

I know I'm late to the game on House of Cards. I'm only on season 3, but I'm getting very frustrated with Claire.

In season 2 she is this conniving woman who would let a pregnant woman's baby die, but in Season 3 she insults the president of Russia and commits to US led war skirmishes in the middle east because a political prisoner killed himself.

She is a liability to Underwood and the writing props her up to be this strong woman who is Underwood's foundation, but her character jumps from one bad decision to the next.

and the thing is - I"m sure the writers are patting themselves on the back for writing a strong female lead and all that other en-vogue political horseshit. But in reality they've made her a liability to a president who could more effective without her.

The end result is Underwood is better off without her. That isn't a strong feminist message to me.

In season one and two, she was everything she needed to be as a strong female lead. In season 3 they just made her a neurotic train wreck who can't think past her own impulses.

She needs to be more Hillary Clinton, less Lucy Ricardo

I didn't have any doubt that the policeman Hoyt had hired as their head of security killed him. He found the pink room, he could've revealed the whole thing about them abducting his daughter, which was why Hoyt himself blackmailed the detectives that he wouldn't reveal that they had killed the guy if they would drop the case. I definitely think the dad was murdered by Hoyt's guy...
