According to the Wilson Daily Times (and you can say that in the grittiest redneck twang you can muster: Wiiiisssin Dallleh Tiiiiimmmmmezzzz), someone up the line in your fambly, maybe the Blount fellow, was credited with saving Wilson from Sherman's torches, like Goldsboro and Fayetteville got. He basically persuaded the yankees to just stay down in Goldsboro and leave Wilson alone and it worked. There should be a statue at the courthouse if true especially if it meant extra burning in Goldsboro.

Goldsboro was not burned, and Sherman only burned the arsenal in Fayetteville (which was located less than a mile from where my house stands).

Sherman made it a point to take it easy on North Carolina. He understood North Carolina was a relunctant participant that was forced into secession.

When he rode thru Goldsboro, he could see that it was such a shithole that there was no need to waste a match on it. He was there to destroy, not improve...

Yep, that was great-great grandpap George Washington Blount, he was an officer in the Confederacy, but only ceremonial I'm sure, as he was in his 60's during the Civil War. He was the mayor of Wilson at the time, as was his grandson (my grandfather, whom I'm named after) about 60 years later, in the 1920's. At the time, he was the youngest mayor in the country at 24 years old. When I was 24 years old, I was self-reporting to federal prison. I'm sure my ancestors would've been proud...

"We've got Da-Nite"

That's an old Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton tune.

Incorrect. Sherman burned a lot of Fayetteville, including the secesh newspaper that he watched be set ablaze while enjoying a cigar. Goldsboro was also roughed up with transportation lines cut, bridges destroyed. They didn't even come to Wilson thanks to hedge's greatx5 grandpap

Sherman burned up the arsenal, train/transport related infrastructure and military installations, but he didn’t engage in wholesale destruction like he did in South Carolina.

Well, duh. South Carolina deserved every bit of it, too. Still does.

caught another good documentary last night on PBS - American Masters

They profiled Loretta Lynn. It was surprisingly open and honest.

I have no idea how old it is. It had Sheryl Crow in it, and she was part of a tribute album around 2014 or so I"m guessing that is about when it was.

no, I couldn't tell you where it is

last year my wife and I went hiking at a lake in eastern Kentucky. We were 20 miles outside of Hazard, so we went there just to say we had.

Eastern Kentucky is beautiful in some areas, depressing in others. I'm guessing Butcher Holler is the latter.
