I made a comment at Worldcrossing over at that liberal forum of Hobbes, Random International I think. That because Jon Will could succeed (particularly supporting himself working for baseball teams), anyone could. The libs there castegated me saying that the ONLY reason Jon Will has anything in life, is because he the son of the smarted man in the world who makes a lot of money by writing things. That's it. Without his father, he would never have had his cushy job with the ballteam and he would be either institutionalized or dead.

I stopped posting at the forum soon after.

By the by sardis, FergusonFoont (from Worldcrossing fame) is responding to this very article right now.

Small world.

http://www.bareknuckles.org/flatland/Buzzle1.html

Note that this page was first put up on the web in 1997, and last updated in 2001. Alison is 27 now and as full of beans as ever. She's a GREAT dancer and often wow's 'em at The Dubliner and Whitlow's, dancing with a joy and abandon that captivate everyone around. People gather in a circle around her and line up to dance with her. She has a great job with an organization that services people with handicaps far, far greater than her own.

In 2005 she had a very near brush with death. The repair on her heart valve had begun to fail and she needed another surgery. Her doctors needed to pull her infected teeth before cutting into her heart -- tooth infections spread too readily to the heart to risk it -- and Medicaid would not approve the prerequisite extractions. Because of recent changes in Medicaid regulations it took five months to get the dental work (pulling ALL of her teeth) approved, and over that five months her valve deteriorated too badly to be repaired. She needed to have an artificial valve implanted instead, dooming her to a lifetime on Coumadin.

She came through the surgery OK, although when it came time to awaken her and have her breathing tube removed I urged the doctors to FIRST remove the tube, then rouse her from sleep, but they didn't listen. When they awakened her she was scared and tried to talk. When she couldn't she began to fight, and she's really, really strong -- shockingly so after being so heavily sedated and having her chest cut open. It took me and five large and muscular orderlies -- and 20 minutes of intense wrestling -- to subdue her enough to remove the tube. She probably injured herself pretty badly.

She began her recovery, but more slowly than last time -- MUCH more slowly. She was weak and listless -- for the first time in her life. And then, two weeks after getting out of the hospital, her fever shot up and we had to rush her back.

Even though I would disagree with the socialist on most things, he has a point here. I think he should email Mr. Will with his story, but do it nicely. Give him the perspective from a common man. Even though Mr. Will is smart as they come, he doesn't have perspective. Most academia do not. They live in their pampered bubbles without knowledge of not having tenure or running a business.

Get your daughter's teeth pulled when they need to be pulled. Sign the promissary note and worry about who pays what later. To think there won't be delays with socialized medicine is a fantasy. It took my uncle 17 months to have his knee replaced in Scotland. It'll happen here, too.

i am surprised that a down's syndrome child, like alot of children with disabilities, is not covered by Medicaid. I have a brother who is not down's syndrome, but severely retarded. I could swear he was covered by Medicaid all his life.

I guess common sense would say why he would think it would be any different if we had nationalized healthcare. He made a choice between a nationalized healthcare plan offered and private insurance.

Ferguson Foont is a lunatic and you shouldn't be trying to apply rational thoughts to any situation he might describe.

Medicaid was intended for the most needy, George Will's son, Ferguson Foonts daughter. Foont's point is entirely invalid as George Will would never advocate for ending Medicaid, neither would Republicans.

What Will would want, what the GOP wants, (what I want) is to tear Medicaid down completely and build it back up again with the MOST needy (Will's son and Foont's daughter.) There are entirely too many people on Medicaid that have no business being there.

He's dangerous.

He is highly intelligent, a excellent writer, and he has ZERO TOLERANCE for those who disagree with him. He never allowed discent on his forum. He can't handle it. He suffers from BPD.

I say he is dangerous because anyone as smart as he is also knows the law and can take LEGAL vengenous against those whom he feels may have wronged him in someway (a way only clear to him as he has BPD.) These people (th elunacy of which you speak) are wrought with evil.

Obama's "...A Nation of Julias..." Ad-campaign

It is effective. The pictoral is effective because there is an ever growing percentage of women in this country who will not only NEVER get married in their lifetime, they will never even be offered one marriage proposal, not one. This bit of reality is terrible and unfortunate, but it is what it is. This is the country that we live in where marriage (which absolutely benefits women more than it does men, specifically because of the laws surrounding it) is increasingly only for the educated, the beautiful, and the intelligent. And the women who wont ever be married, they KNOW who they are and they KNOW if they identify themselves with Julia or not. These are the women who wind up marrying the state. They were probably going to vote to re-elect the President anyway, but the Ad is a good reminder as to why these women feel they need to do so.

The ad is also insulting, although the women who can identify with Julia may not see it that way. It is insulting because the President is essencially saying to this subset of non-marrying women, that you are functionally incapable of ever taking care of yourself. From the moment you were born, you were fucked. There was nothing that you could do to save yourself and were it not for government, you would be dead. That is the message. This is a message that would make absolutely no sense to men (even those men whom no woman would ever marry) as men (married, single, divorced, widowered, etc) have the basic, objective understanding, of how to function and live in this increasingly difficult world. Women are different. Too many of them are more emotionally driven and this ad taps into their emotions. So in that sense, it is an effective ad.
