You know, I started doing research on promoting the assistant coach from within, and found that those guys are pretty damn successful in terms of moving on via the ladder, or remaining at their teams rather than ending up resigning or getting fired. The only ones that have failed in the last decade or so are a couple instances (I only looked at mid-majors or majors) where they promoted an assistant to replace a fired coach (Rutgers and Hawaii) or a retiring coach (Sutton and Knight basically, uh and Skip I guess). That got me looking at coaching hires in general...it turns out that coaches, any coach, who accepts a job when the previous coach gets hired away by a bigger school is almost always successful. Like literally Jeff Capel is like the only guy that fell on his face in the last decade when he took over after Sampson left for IU. Basically, the turnaround job is a very risky proposition, but hopping on the Butler/Xavier/VCU/Tulsa/etc gravy train of coaches moving up works like a charm for your career.

"So how in the hell is Duke spending $7m on expenses more than programs that give their college basketball program carte blanche to spend as they see fit?"

Well, they used to have pretty good pregame meals for the media (compared to UNC's Aramark gaffle) and provided halftime snacks like cookies and fruit but I hear they cut that out this year so I don't have an answer to your question

They're still under an antiquated contract with the company that polishes the silver spoons.

In college, place matters. Certain programs are always going to be top-tier, regardless of the coach, either because of the culture of the atletic department, the history of the school or the geographical location of the campus.

Ohio State has no in-state competition for top athletes - particularly in football. They will always be a relative power, even with an Earl Bruce as head coach.

St. John's in basketball, Arizona State in baseball, BYU in football - those programs may not win a lot of national championships, but they will consistently perform well just because of what/where the school/program is, regardless of the coach.

Heh...yeah, right. It's only the second best coaching job in the state of north carolina so how can it be the top in the country. Funny.

"F*cking bozo the clown."

Bozo should be capitalized. It's a proper name. Very proper...
