Pretty much describes America today, dumbass. Do you have a fucking clue as to what you're talking about? This country was founded on small businesses, not monolithic corporations that suck jobs out of the economy and sell crappy, built-to-fail products. You used to be able to count on good service and quality products but not anymore. And nothing's that cheap either, except your view of history.

Look Saint, just because your grandparents lost their tiny, bullshit, retail store in some town out in the middle of nowhere the minute the Wal-Mart came to town (which made everyone in the town collectively richer at the expense of the small retail store owner) don't come bitching to me. Wal-Mart is progress. A tiny specialty store, isn't.

Small business is great, but not ALL business models should succeed if they are "small." How about a small car maker? You can have a small airline, but how about a small airline manufacturer? A bunch of very small savings-and-loans wound up costing each taxpayer in these United States about $3300 each back in 1991, was that so great?

Retail is best when it is BIG not small. Fuck you if you are too brain-damaged to think otherwise. BIG retail means purchase directly from manufacturers, never a wholesaler. BIG means you have the power to dictate TO the manufacturer exactly how much they can charge if the manufacturer wants the "privledge" of putting their goods on YOUR shelves. BIG means you have the power to import crap made by 13 year old Malyasian girls in South East Asia sweatshops 8000 miles away. And who ultimately wins in all these circumstances?

The American consumer wins.

Saint wrote:Reagan, who ran on the platform of shrinking gov't, instigated the single biggest piece of federal legislation to impact my life when he and that bitch Liddy Dole forced states to raise their drinking ages to receive highway funding.
Congress passed this bill because young people (and ALL of them had cars) were acting like a bunch of drunk animals. Reagan just signed it into law because he was sick and tired of seeing so many dead motorists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_M ... ng_Age_Act

Remember, any state is free to set whatever drinking age they want. But what the states want is federal highway dollars, not highway deaths. By 1984, we had an abundance of data showing how irresponsible young people were with the drinking. So Congress did what the data told them to do, try to financially motivate the states to raise the age for people to purchase alcohol.

There is actual talk at Capitol Hill about changing this back to 18. The logic behind this is that cars and trucks today (unlike in 1984) are designed with so many lifesaving measures that reducing the drinking age is unlikely to have any real meaningful impact on increasing the number of drunk driving fatalities. Hell we have over 100,000,000 licensed and registered vehicles on the road today and we have far fewer road fatalities than we had with just one third the number of registered cars and trucks.

The impact of this legislation dramatically impacted higher education in this country. It was pretty much unheard of at college or university campuses where anyone was asked for "ID". That just wasn't necessary. Today, when the 18 and 19 year old kids hook up with a slightly older student, they encourage that student to hit the package store and buy for everyone encouraging the dangerous "binge drinking." So, University presidents strongly want Congress to undo that 1984 highway funds act reducing the drinking age back to 18. http://www.amethystinitiative.org/

Moreover, the entire ritual of college March "Spring Break" to Florida, was a much bigger, much more meaningful adventure when even college freshmen could go and drink. 300,000 kids at Ft Lauderdale was evidence of this. Lookie here....

....this type of event would mean absolutely nothing to college freshmen today, not one thing. It harkens back to a time when no one checked IDs. Today, Ft Lauderdale is lucky if it gets even 5000 Spring Breakers. Daytona Beach, simply because it is easier to get to by car, might get 20,000 breakers if they are lucky. The kids want to drink, or they wont go. Lowering the ages of Florida night clubs to be 18-and-up has not had any meaningful remedy on the Spring Break crowd. College kids go on Spring Break where they can drink (Mexico.)

Lauderdale is still very popular with the British and some of the other Eurotrash. But its days of a Spring Break destination are long gone, not to return until the drinking age in Florida goes back to 18.

The reason for "Lauderdale" over any other Florida destination was two-fold, a very long 26 mile public beach, and much, MUCH warmer weather in southern Florida. You could wear "less" and go in the water. In Daytona in March, maybe you could go in the water, but maybe not.

The SEC Spring Break kids still meander over to Panama City Florida (quickie, one-tank-of-gas drive from Mississippi, Alabama, Louisianna, Georgia, and Tennesee), but the Florida panhandle in March, it is still way too cold to go in the water. So it winds up being a sweatshirt and jeans Florida "Spring Break" instead of thong bikinis. And even then, 20,000 students tops over a 4 week period, not the 300,000+ Lauderdale had just months before Reagan signed that 1984 bill.

1985 was basically the "last hurrah" for Spring Break drinking in Florida.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._histo ... e_by_state

Florida, lowered drinking age to 18 in 1973 following the 26 Amendment to the US Constitution

Florida raised to 19 in 1980, raised to 21 in early July, 1985. So the college freshmen had one more year to get totally polluted.

I was down there in '88. Picked up some college girl at a bar called "Cherries" (had a swimming pool) and boned her on the beach that same night. Spent the rest of our trip boning her in our hotel room which pissed my buddy (Yes, my same friend from Cincinnati that was boning Huggins' secretary Reeny) off because he had to wander around like he was homeless the whole time. He actually left early and I flew back later.

Crow and IB are the Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde of message boards......no that is not true. They are the two sides of Mr Hyde. Its amazing they would post the ignorant shit they post but even more amazing that it is put up with. My friend Hedge has long said The Goat Pen had a certain charm in its smack and irreverance. I figured he was right as it sure seemed to be a forum in which folks had talked smack to each other and cracked wise for a long time. Had to be some meat there, right?

I'm actually sorry I (and Hedge) were wrong about that. The reason Crow talks about his meat all the time is because that is all it is, talk. The only one around here he could and probably has "boned" is IB.......one more thing, when do the 'reruns' start? Or is this all there is.

So will this be four or is it five straight losses to the Spartans of Michigan State?

My friend Hedge

well there's your first problem right there. you not only have a relationship with hedge but you were stupid enough to believe something he said. what's your job at the feed store? sweeper? bean counter? (I mean literally counting beans not accountant or anything), toilet cleaner?

Heh. There you go again. All I said was my "friend Hedge." The rest of the bullshit you spouted was your own supposition about what friendship means. So, rather than address the obvious point I made, you procede to tell us about your own rather suspicious attitude and relationship with those you call 'friends.'

Well at least you didn't tell us who you 'allegedly' "boned' in Ft Lauderdale. By the way, you "boning" IB too?

What's the motto here? "Disrespection and more?" Where and when do we ever get the "more?" And then there is the pretentious monicker: The Goat Pen: The forum without decorum. Okay, I get it. You ain't clever, you ain't original , you ain't thoughtful. So what have you got left. Mindless smack and insutls. Jacking off to fantasies from your dweebie youth or faking it about girls you (get this) "boned" (hah, hah, hah) when you were watching either porn or, more likely, exploitations movies like "Where the Boys are" or "Girls Gone Wild" (multipart who knows what) while whacking off in your mommy's basement. Except for Crow and IB of course, who were fucking and sucking each other while imagining how smart and clever they were, in lieu of cuming. This joint is a joke and a pale replica of an imagined gaggle of wit that never was.

"Opie" For christ's sake. Opie tops anybody here I've yet read and is at least competent.

Matthews must feel he is owed something for being here, otherwise he would have went away and stopped posting by now.
