My dad brought home some govt cheese and other foodstuffs in the generically labeled cans. He even had some govt peanut butter that was pretty gross. Not sure where he got it from but he worked for Orkin and brought shit home all the time

I was just going to say - about the time of government cheese, the generic labeled food was also a big hit

There wasn't food bad enough they wouldn't buy if it was cheaper than brand names.

We had apple trees around the place and she'd get the apples in the fall, cut them up in quarters and leave them to dry in the sun on plywood on saw horses. Once they were sufficiently covered in flies then it was time to bring them in and make apple pies. She made a bunch of them over the years - similar in size to the kind you would buy from hostess and give them out to everybody. Our country doctor was a big fan of them.

I also remember she loved making popcorn balls. I don't think anyone liked them. I can remember being at her house for Halloween one year and giving them out, kids would be like "whats this crap?" when she'd dump a softball size popcorn ball into their bag
Good post eCat... I grew up the same way. Had forgotten all about the popcorn balls mom gave out for Halloween until your post.... we were too poor to buy store bought candy. Pull candy was a big hit for Christmas also....50's and 60's was the best time in the world to grow up though. Wouldn't trade it for what these kids are growing up with today.

that must have been a very depressing era for poor people trying to eat - generic food items in colorless packaging

Pimento cheese is, indeed, disgusting.

Now store bought stuff is cheaper than home made, usually. I can't imagine canning food is economically feasible. Except freshcut cornon freezer bags

Pimento cheese is just shredded cheddar, a few pimentos, and some mayo.

And it is good.

Yeah, free streaming porn and dozens of hook-up sites where basically all you have to do is swipe one way and you're getting some pussy in 15 minutes. Who would trade popcorn balls and pull candy for that??

I don't even know what pull candy is, but I wanted to say it...

Crotch is one of the few people who would say growing up during the Civil War was the best time in the world. But I'm sure those antebellum days were nice. Well, for some...

Pimento cheese is very good and a lot of places down here put it on burgers. I love it.

I grew up in the North and my dad and my grandparents on his side would eat ungodly body parts of animals because they were cheap. Even after he came into some money, dad would still boil chicken gizzards every Saturday, not deep fry, BOIL. It would emit such a toxic odor throughout the house. One Christmas Eve grandma served us beef heart, tried passing it off as pot roast. She would do the same with sweet potato pie, try passing it off as pumpkin.
