I guess to be accurate it would have to be "Gay Pedophiles".

I honestly believe the number of people that actually want the name changed is statistically small, just a cause that many Americans have been conditioned to accept at face value because of the fragile state of race relations in this country.

The name does not promote, diminish or damage Native Americans in any way. The football team is not insensitive to Native Americans, and in fact I'm sure the name was created to honor the native Americans.

I don't know about the name being created to honor native americans, but I doubt it was done to intentionally insult them. Be that as it may, I don't see how a name like redskins can be seen as much different than nigger. Just b/c native americans have been more marginalized than african americans, it's still an insulting name. What if some southern college named themselves the Escaped Slaves in an attempt to capitalize on how good their running game was? Yeah, we can joke about that in here or at some Comedy Central roast, but in the real world, that doesn't fly. Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly ambivalent (is that an oxymoron?) on this issue, but I can see how some would be very un-ambivalent about it...

Well I for one am glad that we have finally cured cancer, taken care of the homeless, stopped most violent crimes, have a balanced budget, and healthcare for all people that everyone can afford and not get fucked over. Now we can focus on the REAL issues, like changing the name of a football team that is relevant for around 20 weeks of the year.

America!!....FUCK YEAH!!!

I think the term "red skin" was a derogatory name for a Native American. It's also why St. John's changed their name years ago. No team would call themselves the Japs or the Nips today, either. Just because it's not a term quickly associated as a slur in these days doesn't mean it's not a slur.

Also, as a person who spent many years in DC and loved to watch Riggins run and Theisman do his thing, I'm not devoting much of my emotion to whether or not the Redskins change their name (basically, the hedge position). However, that doesn't mean that I don't see where people come from when they say it's offensive. Also, I think (much like Chris Christie said in his last debate) that we can chew gum and walk at the same time. We can talk about a name change and also work on curing cancer. It's harder to do when the NIH isn't funded fully via shutdowns and sequestration, but we can do it.

yea I can see we'd never have a team called the blackskins, but who today even refers to native americans as Redskins? I doubt even the most ardent indian hater out there would think to use that archaic term.

How far to do you take it - does a tarheel become insulting in the near future?

" I doubt even the most ardent indian hater out there would think to use that archaic term."

Somehow I got a chuckle thinking about somebody out there who really hates indians...

In Blood Meridian, the gang often referred to indians as niggers. No, that's not very nice, but I guess when your sole purpose is to murder and scalp someone, you're not really worried about offending them with names...

In one scene, the gang is sitting in a eating joint and evidently they are very dirty from the road and the proprietor thinks they are black and asks them to sit in another section. He tells them he is happy to serve people of color, but they have to sit in a certain section of the restaurant. But instead of moving to another section, they killed him. So ironically, they did take a stand for individual rights in some cases...

I am a member of PETA and think that all mascots should not be referenced to animals nor should those animals be used in any shape or from for that sporting event.

TIA!!

No. No we can't.

Better yet, maybe we shouldn't be allowed.

Case in point.

Did I really need a funded study to tell me that if I eat bacon and sausage that might affect my health in a negative way?

Redskins as a name is an anachronism.

I don't think they mean it to be insulting, but I can understand why some could object to it and view it as a slur.

Snyder won't change it unless the NFL makes him, though. It's hard for me to care much one way or another.

If I have to deal with the fucking Black Bears, then Redskins and Fighting Irish have to go, too!
