What amazed me were the really expensive western-style department stores and malls---they were packed and people were spending! Little girls--once almost throw-away children are now "in demand" and we saw them dressed almose like the kiddy beauty contestants--and throwing tantrums in public--just like Western kids! Seriously, I could not believe the amount of money being spent in these very posh mall stores.

I liked the idea of attaching a green card to every college degree that is science, math or engineering.

That would go a long ways on making us take the lead in the world and at the same time set countries like India and China back

There was a documentary on TV about a home builder who only uses American made products. He has a list of companies who make everything needed in a home--even down to the nails--there is a nail factory in Ohio--(Mase?) that stated if they could sell a certain number of nails (can't remember how many but not a ridiculous amount) they could employ 25 more people. You can download the list--Moen is American made so are the Gorilla products.

Interesting. Explain how it would work. I'm not sure what you are advocating. (I'm interested because most of the EE departments' graduate students are foreign students).

When I go on a college recruiting trip, about 60% of the kids I talk to in engineering need sponsorship by my company.

Just like we offer citizenship to guys serving in our military, Romney said we should staple a green card to every diploma of a foreign student who graduates with a Math, Science or Engineering degree and keep these guys here.

I wouldn't be for it if we had an abundance of American students majoring in these fields, but we don't and we need people like this to grow the economy.

Heck, most of them already stay here. The first thing they try and do after getting here is change their visa status. It is rare for them to go home. Most of the Professors now are from India or China.

I can't speak for others but in my field, there has been a serious crackdown in the last 5 years mandating that we only send American contractors to companies like Boeing, Lockheed, Honda, Toyota (yea, I see the irony), P&G, etc.,

And to sponsor someone is a huge pain in the ass , because the laws are written where you have to stay constantly engaged with that person, changing their job title every year, etc.,

I've been in a recruiting booth next to Toyota before where they put a up a sign saying they would only accept resumes from American citizens.

I can only speak for hospitals. FMG are about 35% of a hospital's roster. They come over on a student visa, make a promise to practice in a rural area and then petition to get that changed as soon as possible.

I have a friend in England who would love to come and live here--she has many friends here. She can afford to buy a house cash, pay for medical insurance, has a good income (and is a shopaholic so plenty of money into the economy--plus taxes) and US Embassy told her it would be a 15+ year wait to apply for a green card!------I need to find her a husband for 3 years!

Come as a student and go for the post-collegiate degree. Much shorter.

You know how many emails my wife gets from China, "I have looked at your research and am really interested in working in your area. Please consider me as one of your graduate students."

only as soon as they get here to get, "I want to transfer to ---insert random school here--- to be closer to ---insert girlfriend, wife, boyfriend, husband, or other family member."

Seriously, Americans are rare in most Electrical Engineering Programs in this country.

I've gotten to where I will not knowingly ingest any food substances from China. I picked up a can of pumpkin puree in Dollar Tree yesterday and was attracted to the simple line of type on the can: Ingredients: Pumpkin.

But then I rotated the can and saw MADE IN CHINA and thought there was probably some slope sweat and possibly other fluids in the mix.

In LSU engineering: only 5 full-time engineering professors and none currently on tenure-track (as opposed to tenure) out of about 30 full-time professors
