Its definitely cheaper to hire a person...thats exactly what Uber is. Of course it'll be even cheaper still once the Uber can drive itself instead of paying someone to drive it.

You don't hear Tim Cook saying watch out for GPS in cell phones.
Actually, he has talked about security concerns of such tracking and the like. Granted, it’s largely a marketing / competition angle, but he has talked about various tracking issues.

I decided to drive for Lyft in my spare time. I went through the process of getting one of my cars on Lyft. I went through their onboarding, step-by-step. Got everything approved, got the app loaded, got my login, everything. So I got in my car, turned on the app, and started to drive for Lyft one afternoon. It was a Wednesday.

3 hours. I had 3 hours of drives, 6PM to 9PM. Inside of that 3 hours, I had 9 fares. Picked everyone up, dropped everyone off, no incidents, and NO idle time. 6 people rated me a 5-star on the app. it went great. No problems. Total gas for 3 hours of almost non-stop driving, $40. That was my investment, $40 (plus wear and tear on the car.) So I go home to get on the app on my laptop to see how much I made!!!!!

$61.

3 hours of driving, and $40 of my own money for gas and Lyft had $61 put into my bank account for 9 drives spanning a distance of 203 miles. That was it, I was out, never to drive for Lyft again. Why waste my time, I already wasted 3 hours of it? But I have had time to hire people from Lyft to pick me up. I recount this story because on one such long Lyft, I told them what I went through and asked them why HE did it, why HE was driving me? You know what he said?
Lyft and Uber are like gambling. Its just gambling. I am gambling that I can get $100 in cash tips from people in those 3 hours. Sorry that they never tipped you, but that is the only reason why anyone drives for Lyft or Uber, cash tips.
A lot of those drivers can't work normal, W2 jobs the way we can. So these marginal people have to do odd gig things for income, Lyft and Uber being one of them. But the pay is so low (Lyft and Uber basically keep all the money, they exploit the drivers) that it really is just gambling the host's time in the hopes of the host getting cash that they will never claim as income. There simply is no other financial reason to drive for Lyft or Uber.

You were paid $20 per hour, and you're complaining? That has to be a significant raise over what you make digging ditches.

I have always tipped, cash with Uber, in the app with Lyft.

I think maybe Uber now has tipping in the app, but I mostly do Lyft now.

A friend of mine retired and decided to do Uber as a way to pick up some extra cash. I think he also enjoyed having a bunch of stories to tell when we all get together.

I don't think he made any money at it either when all was said and done

That said , when is the last time you took a taxi anywhere? I'm guessing the taxi industry outside of well regulated cities, is dead

$21 divided by 3 hours is $7 an hour. Plus, I had to pay for the 7% self-employment tax.

I know, I know, $6/hour (after tax) is a hell of a lot more than I was making as a software developer so why be so damn greedy? As you said, why complain? But meh, I guess I just lost interest.

More than half of Lyft/Uber drivers never drive again after driving one day. I was inundated with text messages and calls from CSRs wanting to know why I (a 5-star driver with 6 glorious reviews) wouldn't go back on the portal and start driving again. I told them exactly what I told all of you and I got the exact same response, over and over
I am very sorry to hear that
Never, oh, here let me give you more money. Here, let me tell you how to make more money. Never anything like that, just standard boilerplate apology and we are "sorry." But the phone calls and the text messages kept coming, unabated.

Its like gambling. If I am going to gamble for money, it won't be driving lazy, peasant people from the supermarket to their public housing apartment. I'll go shoot craps or bet on sports.
