Riots break out in SJU. [Passengers] are breaking computers, attempting to break the jet bridge door, and are assaulting gate agents. 25 crew members are huddled in a ramp break room waiting for SWAT to escort them away. Crews are urged to change clothes to avoid detection. Tempers are flaring at [Orlando] and [Fort Lauderdale] as well.

Every Airline has been dealing with severe IROPs. This is not OK. Its more than stress level 10. I never thought I would see “urged to change out of uniform” I understand travelling is stressful but this is not okay.

Attempting to break the jet bridge door? And why? Because there are no gate agents. There are no ramp agents. There are no ticket agents. There are no Spirit Airlines staff at the airport and all you have is long lines of passengers waiting to get on flights that will never leave because Spirit does not have enough pilots or flight attendants. So everything is IROP. But there is no one to tell the passengers what is going on, and the kiosk that spits out the boarding pass can't answer any questions. I mean, fuck. This IS 3rd world shit.

But its worse than that for Spirit Airlines. Because they are a low cost carrier they have no interliner agreements with other airlines so no one else (no other airline employees) are going to step up and help them, because they can't. Spirit kind of stands alone in that regard.

I have a lot of family members that work in the airline industry.

That industry is very inbred, very incestuous. Your son and you daughter work for an airline, your sister, your mother, your step brother, your step-father, that kind of thing. And they all get each other jobs in the airline industry. You go work at one airline and leave it ONLY to go work at another airline. You get addicted to the free travel.

Well rat, let me tell you, Spirit Airlines is an ultra-low cost airline. And as such its employees are paid the least of all airline employees. (Spirit, Sky West, Mesa, Sun Country, Allegiant, etc.) Its basically an "entry-level" airline. A vice President might only make $60,000. So at a minute's notice, their employees will BOLT for another airline the instant they get the opportunity to do so. You pay could go from $15 an hour to $21 an hour for the exact same job. At that level, it is worth it to jump.

Well rat, in this once instance, Spirit is royal and truly fucked. They don't have any employees working the ticket counters or gates or ramps. And all their captains have already maxed out all their flight hours for the year. That is strictly regulated. So not only do they lack enough crews to staff their planes, they lack all the logistical support for the crews. You might see a Spirit Airlines flight attendant told to throw bags on the belt to get the plane into the air. Its that bad.

Spirit rebooks them on a flight after 24 hours of sleeping on the floor or what-not, and then they go and cancel the rebooked flight.
