He started pretty well and Obama seemed to fumble a bit at the very beginning, but then they both went into message mode, which is no surprise. No real gotcha moment from either or major flub either. Overall I'd say Romney will probably get a bigger bump from this if only b/c he was floundering so badly and he was solid if unspectacular in this debate. He didn't come across as an out of touch trillionaire who has no clue about real people (whoever they are). So he basically proved he's an actual human being. That's progress, I guess, but I didn't see anything that anybody is going to be talking about past this weekend from either guy....

Not quite sure what to think about the opening of Romney's closing statement: "Thank you, Mr. President, for tuning in tonight". I don't think he meant anything sassful by that, but in reality, I don't know what the hell he meant...

I honestly expected Romney to talk about owning a cadillac or how he knows hardship because he had to hire a plumber to fix a broken toilet - something like that.
I thought what he did best was come off as presidential. The bottom line is that if you believe in his policies you can see him as president. If you don't, then what he says tonight probably won't mean much.
I don't believe for a second he'll be able to do much if any of the things he talked about but then again, I don't think Obama can either.

yea I caught that to, but clearly he was talking to the audience after thanking the president but it sounded like a straightfaced jab.

Not sure what Jim Lehrer's role was supposed to be tonight, and it appeared that he wasn't either...

Ah. Didn't catch that, but I do now. FWIW, I didn't immediately think it was a jab at Obama, I just didn't know what the heck to think of it. I was probably typing and didn't see that he was addressing the audience, in which case it was perfectly appropriate. But hearing it as seeming to be addressed to Obama, I was just confused...

one thing Romney did right off the bat was confuse Obama in a classic Mitt Romney move
"Mr. Romney plans on tax cuts for the wealthy"
"no I'm not"
"for the last 18 months you have said you will"
"tonight I'm saying I'm not"
"you white motherfucker"

MSNBC pundits are ripping Obama a new one. I don't see why, but I suspect they're trying to light a fire under their viewership who they want to make sure doesn't get complacent and think this thing is already in the bag. From my vantage, I'd call that a dead draw or at worst (very worst) Romney gets the slight nod only b/c of how bad he was doing up to this point and he came out and didn't implode, but that's more of a statement on how bad he WAS doing than how well he DID do tonight. Not sure what to make of this obvious strategical "OMG, that was a disaster" take every one of the MSNBC pundits are clearly taking. Trying to make a game out of this thing to keep ratings up? That wouldn't surprise me a bit...

I think team Obama probably has a long term plan of getting Romney locked in with his statements in the first debate, which is why Romney tried like hell not to give specifics.
The next debate will probably have Obama coming in putting Romney on the defensive more.

Judging by twitter, Obama actually got his ass stomped. Jumped up idiot repubs are strutting like cocks of the walk while libs seem to be bitching about the moderation.
I laughed at one tweet that said "watching MSNBC discuss the debate is like watching the Titanic discuss the iceberg."

another board I'm reading is talking about MSNBC in meltdown mode right now. I couldn't even tell you what channel MSNBC is on my TV - I know its close to the weather channel though.

I think the MSNBC crowd smelled blood in the water and wanted more sass from their boy, which is basically what they spend their lives and careers spouting off. I guess I can't fault anybody for craving sass, but libs sure seem to have a genius for shooting themselves in the foot (I''m speaking of Ed and Rachel and Al, et alia, not the candidate). Wouldn't it be ironic is they blew this whole thing for Obamer? I actually don't think they have that much power but they've been gloating for the past month and now they've been brought back to reality. I still can't see Obama losing this thing....

What middle income americans are being crushed? I'm middle income and sure, I'd like more, but I'm hardly being "crushed". The only thing crushed around here tonight (and almost every night) is the grapes that made the juice that went into the multiple bottles of wine I drink every night, and it's not Boone's Farm. Not that I have anything against Boone's Farm, but that's not what I'm drinking these days. Seriously, who is being crushed?
