"I am almost desperate enough to fly to Memphis, find a 2013 Nissan "Leas-san" on Craigslist for $7000, give the owner cash, and drive it back to Phoenix. "
How much can you sell that for in Phoenix?
Sell??!!!???
(shakes head)
No.

IB thinks he is smart by doing something smart folks in the car business did months ago: buy used vehicles in good shape with 100k miles or so and sell them at a tidy premium to make a profit in the shortage.
Dealers can't get new vehicles in due to shortages, and used cars are at a premium as a result. I could sell our 2016 Suburban for a decent price and pocket close to $10k, but I wouldn't be able to find anything for my wife to drive without paying MSRP or higher on a new vehicle or a new vehicle price for a late model, used vehicle.
IB -- shocking as this may sound -- is an idiot who isn't able to realize that the shortage is nationwide.

I would love to sit at a table and play poker against you. I would be raising constantly. You would be calling my bullshit constantly, and you would pay me because I don't bluff enough.

If you're not selling anything right now, you're stupid. If you have something you can sell because its excess, sell it. Hell, I'm trying to convince my wife to sell our house, park the money for a while, rent for a few years and wait for the bubble to burst in 3-5 years, but because this is the house in which she was raised and in the neighborhood where she wants to live, I can't get her to budge. Neighbors around the corner listed their home for $565k and the house was under contract above asking price within three days....

Okay you are being smart DS. You should sell the house. See, I complimented you.
But you don't always have to sell things to monetize them.

When demand is out of whack in comparison to supply and interest rates are still low, it's crazy not to sell right now.
One of my best friends bought a condo in Atlantic Beach for $265k in 2015. Granted, my buddy has $25-30k in the condo for upkeep and upgrades on top of condo dues, but he is selling the condo for $530k cash (buyer is doing a 1031) with the buyer paying the closing fees and allowing my buddy to rent the place back dirt cheap for the next six weeks.

The 2008 bubble was created by people who had no business buying ANYTHING buying (and financing) houses, 100% loan to value. The crisis was only caused because the credit unworthy could no longer flip what they never really owned. This situation, the credit unworthy can't buy anything now. Its just the credit worthy buying and holding everything. And in some cases, they are paying CASH for everything (no financing.) So, I am not convinced that there is a bubble.
If Dr Mike Burry isn't shorting, then there isn't a bubble.
