when solar cells hit the 35-40% efficiency range then they will be acceptable - 40 - 50 years maybe?
I have no idea

What effeciency criteria are they using??? Normally a delivered output divided by input would give a ball park estimation, but the sun is the input. That's about as renewable as it gets. Doesn't that make the output free? Sorta?

...fuckin' electricity...

So right now we have Newt, Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Donald Trump, Rick Santorum all running and probably soon Huckabee, Palin, Mitch Daniels, and some other dopes too. Wow. Quite a collection of talent

There's a Big 10 offense somewhere in there... Who's the QB?

...Palin would have to play center, but that's just MY preference...

Any one of them would likely be an improvement over Barry.

...not that that's saying a whole lot.

Depends, is it before or after he shoots Osama in the face and drops his body in the ocean for the sea urchins to feast on?

Why does DSL hate philanthropy?

And why does he still think Palin is going to run for President?

I believe Algore said we only had 10 years left...back in 2006.

We're sooo doomed.

There is still an efficiency to it.

The more efficient the more watts per unit area and the cheaper it would become. Right now an 8.2kW full setup is about 30 grand.

Takes a lot of months of electricity bills to add up to 30k savings.

However the main cost driver is they are just not efficient to make. If they can adopt processes to take advantage of semi-conductor type manufacturing with high yields the price will drop big time. Or I saw something about a type that was almost like ink printing that was much cheaper to manufacture. Also to increase efficiency to be able to convert all the spectrum to energy and not just a narrow band would help greatly.

....let's stop demonizing Big Oil to score political points. It does nothing to encourage the new talent, new ideas, and new entrepreneurs who are most likely to make breakthroughs in new sources of energy.
Poor Big Oil. Everybody is being mean to them just because they are raping us all at the gas pump and are making unimaginable sums of money in the process. Poor babies.

LMAO. Post of the week.

flat panel tv screens used to be very expensive to make too. make it worth while for consumers to put solar panels on every roof and the price will plummet and efficiency will skyrocket.

They better make those things durable enough to withstand hailstorms. It's one thing to replace fiberglass shingles...quite another to replace 30k worth of solar panels.

Finally...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... on_LEADTop
WSJ wrote:Many of the million-dollar couples believe they rightfully deserve the benefits they have been promised. They have, after all, spent all of their working years paying into Social Security and Medicare. And true enough, the typical 66-year old couple and their employers, on their behalf, have contributed nearly $500,000 in payroll taxes (in today's dollars) toward these benefits during their working careers.

But regardless of how much they have contributed, the hard reality is that the federal government has already spent it. No matter how deserving they are, it is younger generations of workers who have to come up with the money.

So today's seniors need to consider how they want the script for "The Millionaire" sequel to be written: There's a knock at the door. We now know that on the other side there's a check for a million dollars. When the door opens, do we really want to see our children, under the commanding gaze of Uncle Sam, presenting us with that check?
I think what needs to happen is two-fold...

#1) increase the minimum age of SS recipients (for anyone under 50) to 68. If you are under 40, you have to wait until 72 before you ever see a dime and...

#2) tell the government to stop spending every cent that comes into SS and turning them into savings bonds that our grandchildren must pay income taxes just to make the interest payments. Have the government take that money and buy real assets in "something" other than government debt

Just tell 'em Wal-Mart wants it. They'll drive the price down some how.
