Re: MIT Engineers
It was an advertisement on the side of some other page I was looking at, I tried to X it out but it opened the page and I started reading it. Another interesting (or something) thing about that website is that some of the individual letters of the text were hyperlinks. Not a whole sentence or word, but just a single letter within random words on the page. WTF is that about? I didn't click on any of them...

Re: MIT Engineers
shit weekend so far.
I was going to get the boy and take the boat out for the first time in 2 years early this morning. Got it hooked up and the trailer lights didn't work, then blew a fuse on the car trying to get the lights to work. Spent the morning fucking with that so I didn't get to go,because it blew the A/C fuse, not the trailer light fuse.
then I was planning on replacing the cam tensioners in my bike this weekend and needed a press but Harbor Freight doesn't have one, so that plan is shot and its about 94 degrees now so its too f'ing hot to be outside for any length of time.
Wife and I did go on a 9 mile hike yesterday at Carter Caves. That was fun.
Sitting around in the A/C sucks when you are burning vacation time
We'll take the boat out tomorrow but every jackass is going to be out on the lake with their 200HP Yamaha Nitro Bass Bomber and I'lll be out there putzing around in my 25HP Jon Boat. That is the boat equivalent of having a finger gun and saying pew pew pew

Re: MIT Engineers
we do it once a year, but I'll let you know.
I like that area - for hikes it has everything, caves, rock climbing, a lake, water falls and the welcome center has a food truck

Re: MIT Engineers
Yep...... a nice place to visit. We often took our 7th grade kids on a field trip to CC and toured the caves. They really enjoyed it. Haven't been there in several years though.

Re: MIT Engineers
We got the boat out this morning, turned out to be a good time.
Since I just had the trolling motor on we didn't go too far out, we stuck around the local fishing spots and did some magnet fishing.
Ended up losing my damn magnet though but the boy and I had a good time. He's decided he wants to take the boat out on his own with some friends. I guess I'm OK with that. I just imagine this

Re: MIT Engineers
I am not knowledgeable about this sort of thing but I recently opened a Roth IRA for my son (I have access to his accounts) but he tried to setup some auto transfer thing once a month and it wouldn't let him.
Reading the help link on it is said something to the effect a Roth is not recognized as a security or something like that and you can only put cash or check directly into it. So that is about worthless. Who wants to go to the bank to deposit money into a Roth? Does this seem normal?

Re: MIT Engineers
I have a Roth IRA account. I can definitely transfer money directly in via the internet. Maybe they won't let you set up an auto transfer because Roth IRAs have a maximum annual deposit limit?
Also, an IRA is an investment account, so you would also have to set up what the money you're putting in there actually gets invested in (ie make a trade) or else it would just sit there either earning nothing, or whatever money market rate that your brokerage provides for uninvested cash.

Re: MIT Engineers
he selected some auto-investing thing based on his age
but we tried both just a one time transfer from his checking and an auto transfer, and it said we couldn't do either.
He had a rollover from his last job so we also opened a traditional IRA and it allowed him to put money into it.

Re: MIT Engineers
I think this is an issue with bank/brokerage rather than one dealing with any rules about IRAs

You can't get money out of a Roth unless you go through hoops. Tax issue.

Re: MIT Engineers
It becomes annoying to document and remember what you've done if you start taking money out, but you are allowed to pull out the amounts of any of your prior contributions out at any time, just not the gains.
In fact just on that basis I would probably recommend some other savings vehicle for auto depositing savings and then making only one deposit a year into the Roth just so its a small number of deposit transactions he would have to go back through and document in the event he wants to pull out contributions for like a house payment or something

I figured at his age it was the best way to get some house down payment money
