You paid $3100 for a preventive procedure? That's what's fucked up about healthcare today: the obscene cost, you insurance not covering it and that you paid it. I told my doctor's office they fucked up when they didn't code it right and had the insurance company cover it all because they told me it would and they would never get $1350 from me

5 years ago I wouldn't have paid for that. It would have cost me $50

but Obamacare now makes me pay for it.

I'm sure someone will tell me how someone making $16K a year gets that procedure subsidized by the government for free and that's what is great about Obamacare.

I've gone to the E.R. 3 times in the past 3 years for chest pain. My work-up was normal, but because of the frequency, starting in October, I had a complete cardiac work-up including CT scan of the chest, CXR, serial EKG's, angiogram. They found out that I had a congenital defect that instead of 2 coronary arteries, I only had one. Therefore, I had a ultrasound of the heart as well. Turns out that the type of defect that I does not decrease my life expectancy at all (because the branching of the coronary artery to feed the posterior heart does not run through the aorta and pulmonary artery). Negative work-up.

In the meantime, I was diagnosed with diabetes in November. This led to consultations with a endocrinologist, 5 meetings with dietitian and multiple follow-ups and labs. I have given up carbs for the most part (mainly grains), increased my fat and protein intake, and lost 35 pounds. Still was having lower chest pain and reflux.

Decision was made to rule-out an ulcer. CT of the stomach was negative, so first an MRI was done. Then they scoped my stomach and only found a very mild hiatal hernia. They also did an EGD and later a gastric emptying test. They also did an ultrasound of my gall bladder and found gallstones. They then did a gall bladder emptying test (inject you to see if the dye gets into the gall bladder and then how long it takes to exit). Turns out, the dye never made it into my gall bladder.

So therefore, in April, I had my gall bladder removed.

Total cost out of pocket: about $1200, less than we paid for my wife's surgery for cancer and chemo 7 years ago.

my brother is equally unsympathetic to the medical costs facing the middle class - he thinks everyone has great insurance even if their wife isn't the head E.R. Nurse at the university medical center

A health plan from a college or hospital are Cadillacs before and after Obamacare. The fact that you equate that to the average middle class situation shows you have no clue the angst out there.

I haven't actively practiced medicine in 22 years. I'm actually on my wife's insurance, not on some private physician insurance. As for cadillac insurance, there are cadillac insurance plans that will face a tax in 2018 under the affordable care act. My insurance isn't one of them. As a comparison to other insurance in the area, it's about the same with one tweek, my first $2000 is free, my next $1000 is out of my pocket and after that it's 10%. Free if you go to in-house (coverage) physicians. That's the plan we chose. Not cadillac insurance, but it's the option we chose.

My son just started working at Intel in Oregon. Just went over his health insurance options. Had 12 different options. He ended choosing the option of money out of his check but no charges for in house physicians. Different options. He could have chosen the one that had minimum money out of his check but up to a $5000 dollar deductible.

Thank you. She was positive for a cancer marker so ended up having a hysterectomy and Oophorectomy (uterus and ovaries) as a precaution.
