Army guys didn't have to put up with Marines.

I wanted to join the marines, but when they found out I knew who my father was, they rejected me.

Well, we do have conditioned air and a roof. Just so happens my roof was a landing strip.

Plus a guaranteed warm, dry bed... a mattress (albeit thin)... showers... three hot meals a day... TV... exercise equipment... a laundry...

Two things Navy guys have to put up with, that Army guys don't, are:

1. Lots of long deployments even in peacetime. I never envied the amount of time Navy people are away from their families between wars.

2. Very little personal space. The Navy is a claustrophobic's nightmare. In the Army there's plenty of opportunity to enjoy wide open spaces.

To hear Army guys talk, you wonder how they can ever convince anyone to join.

Warm bed? Depends on how many blankets you had. I slept in sweats and kept a few flight deck jerseys I wore only for sleep to keep clean.

About 24 hours into basic training, every Army recruit regrets his choice of services. We realize that we get paid the same amount amount of money as a Airman Basic and a Seaman Recruit, but with a fraction of the abuse.

There's an old Army running/marching cadence that goes like this:

"G.I. beans and G.I. gravy....Gee I wish I'd joined the Navy..."

What color was your jersey? I seem to remember that the flunky ABH's wore blue, the fuel handlers wore brown, the ordinance handlers wore red, and the petty officers wore yellow.

Or something like that.

I was on the flight deck when they were launching aircraft once. I must say, the raw force put out by an aircraft at full afterburner just before it launched off the catapult was pretty impressive.

My husband was a marine. Vietnam. He is taking a trip back there on April 13. He will return home May 1. Godspeed.
