One of our drivers is a strict JD man, I bought him a fifth of George Dickel and a fifth of Elijah Craig and told him to compare them and get back to me. I will regard his judgement as the gold standard...

I haven't been much of a bourbon drinker in the past decade or so, since I switched to scotch, I just can't handle bourbon. But I took a couple of sips of the George Dickel and the Elijah Craig that I bought for our driver, I have to admit, they weren't terrible. No way I would consider switching back, but it wasn't as heinous as I thought it would be. Way too sweet. But I think I can handle a few sips every 10 years or so...

I also bought a bottle of Bullitt rye, it was a little better than the GD or EC, but it was pretty thin and hot. Just not a good sipping whiskey. I went home and poured a nice glass of 12 year old Balvenie and said a prayer of gratitude to the alcohol gods for leading me to the promised land...

Booker's.

I'm really on a Four Roses kick. Great bourbon at a reasonable price.

Charter 10 was my 'go to' for 30 years and the idiots at Buffalo Trace ended it.

I'm currently wandering in the wilderness.

Crown Cask 16. Can't seem to find it anymore. Gentleman Jack is pretty good.

Tin Cup is a solid inexpensive choice that is relatively new. Bulleit, Eagle Rare and Four Roses are my favorites. Obviously, Rip Van Winkle if you can get it. Non of these are Tennessee Whiskey, of course. Jack Single Barrel is the only choice there.

The subject was which would you choose between Dickel or Daniels. Neither is anything special imo. And there's no discernable diff between Single Barrel and Gentleman Jack. Again, imo.

Nothing really excites me right now...all the B's, Knob Woodford etc. I've never had the pleasure of Old Rip Van Winkle - I'll try to remedy that in 2015.

A bourbon drinking friend of mine told me that Eagle Rare is good stuff, esp. for the price. Also, I was not particularly impressed with Bulleit when I tried it a few years ago...

Tin Cup is only "American Whiskey" distilled in Colorado, but it is comparable to a Tennessee Whiskey. I like it, but I prefer Kentucky bourbon.

The fact is, I did get a report card of sorts. It was not a bad report card but a good one. A very good one. I will be cashing my "report card" in at the bank for a long time to come. :ugeek:

Have a prosperous, happy new year!
