Clashmore Mike would tell me that it drove him crazy that the only other Irish fan at the Megasite was Marty. He felt embarassed to root for the same team. Having some lunatic BC fans troll here from time to time with their inane banter, I know how that feels.

kevi - heh, my mother was born in England to an Irish mother and English father. Her family emigrated to Canada in the late 20's after her mother and father divorced and finally to Chicago in the early 30's. She was an inveterate reader and her conversation normally included words that required looking up. A big collegiate dictionary was front and center on a book shelf in our house. She was particularly good at using derogatory phrases when discussing someone she did not like. Neither she nor my father were inclined to use curse words and believed the proper use of English gave anyone more than enough ammunition to verbally spar with out resorting to cursing.

Ergo, Marty lacked the humanity to be a blaggard and didn't need to be referred to as a fucking asshole.

Then she would have cringed at your use of the improper homonym "complement" ;)

absolutely - it would have resulted in a 5 to 10 minute discourse on proper usage finished off with an admonition to proof read and be sure of my usage before commiting anything to paper

Your mother sounds a lot like my wife's father, though I suspect his disciplinary style was far more extreme than you experienced.

My mother (a PhD) would give me rewards for answering MAT questions.

"Mom, can I use the car?"

"Depends. JUTLAND : (____) :: HOKKAIDO : JAPAN.
A. Germany
B. Denmark
C. New Zealand
D. British Isles"

"Shit."

My bedtime stories usually came from Scientific American.

I'll bet you were particularly fond of the article where the physics basis of laser operation was detailed. I know it is in my top 10.

The ol' ball coach had a good one with that Citrus quip. Works with Outback, too - heh.

Course we crushed his dream season last year...and then we stole one in Columbia the other night. Bitch is a karma.
