That's what I thought until I read the part in the article, "...and is presumed to be intact since it is programmed to fly level and find a place to land, rather than crashing."

We'll know if Ahmadinejad takes her up for a spin on camera.

I've heard it both ways. burning wreck and relatively intact. if some obscure lab in Iran suddenly blows up we'll know.

If so, it was carrying a payload of simmering meth.

Not that NASA would be looking for anything, now that the shuttle has been retired, to justify their funding.

I wonder what that graph would look like if global temperature were also tracked for the same time - would temperature lead or lag CO2 concentration?...I wonder...

I note the vertical axis measures CO2, not temperature.

IIRC, the top two producers of greenhouse gases are: 1. volcanoes and 2. cow flatulence.

So there must have been a lot of mountains erupting and guernsies farting recently.

Also, I thought that the main mission of NASA these days is to help enhance the self-esteem of the Arab world.

Mainly because that particular chart deals with CO2 levels...hence the big blue "CO2" in the middle of the chart. In the "CO2 section." Followed by other sections, one of which dealt with warming temperatures. sheesh

Incorrect. The top two components of greenhouse gases are water vapor and carbon dioxide.

From NASA and the "warming temperature" section:

All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since 1880. Most of the warming has occured since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years having occured since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occuring in the past 12 years. Even though the 2000s witnessed a solar output decline resulting in an unusually deep solar minimum in 2007-2009, surface temperatures continue to increase.

You said "components." I said "producers." Not the same.

But since you mentioned water vapor and carbon dioxide, those are both horribly dangerous, and especially unnatural, gasses indeed. Too much carbon dioxide can lead to increased photosynthesis, which is a huge danger to the planet. And don't get me started about the havoc that water vapor wreaks on the atmosphere.

http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanowatch/2007/07_02_15.html

because while the average of 200 million tons of [volcano-generated] CO2 is large, the global fossil fuel CO2 emissions for 2003 tipped the scales at 26.8 billion tons. Thus, not only does volcanic CO2 not dwarf that of human activity, it actually comprises less than 1 percent of that value.

It hasn't always been that way, prof, so you're partially correct. Before the Industrial Revolution, volcanic eruptions were indeed the leading producer of the CO2 greenhouse gas. So you got that going for you.
