i think his use of the term legitimately raped was to discern from those who get drunk have date sex then realize they had sex and cry rape. their pregnanyc rate is higher

doesn't alter the fact though that religious zealots like him should not be elected nationally to govern whent etheir views are that narrow that abortion is wrong 1000% of the time. sorry i think the majority of people has some tolerance to abortion under certain circumstances and should vote that way. funny to watch all the repubs fly away from this guy who quoted what is the platform for republicans at their convention anyway. what a bunch of hypocrites

At least 3 different studies from different sources have a figure of about 5%. A study in the one of the medical journals found approximately 32,000 pregnancies per year from rape. His assertion was that you could not get pregnant from rape. He got that from a former head of the right to life (Dr. John Willke, apparently a general practitioner) who put out that theory and mailed it out to Republican members of Congress a number of years ago. It is a crock actually. Willke espouses a belief that the fallopian tube spasms when women are under stress. There is just no real evidence of this.

Here's what he said:

"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," said Akin said of pregnancy caused by rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

Apparently, he was following the same whack-ado doctor as crash.
