Re: La Salle Explorers
I thought about adding the Museum of Natural History, it’s a good museum, but most large cities (like Houston) have something similar. So, with a limited time, I might try a diff museum.

Re: La Salle Explorers
Well, I haven't been up there in 20 years, there was nobody up there when I used to go hang out. It's so out of the way that tourists don't think to go. Or didn't back then. Very nice grassy slope overlooking the Hudson, really nice vista point. Great for picnics or just laying around and drinking wine and reading, but admittedly that might not be on the agenda if you're just there for a few days, which is why I haven't been back since I lived there. It's one of my favorite spots in NY. Very secluded and lots of privacy, which is rare in NY. But if you're really into rube hayseeds wearing socks and crocs, Times Square is definitely the place to go. Wall to wall Senor Frogs and Hard Rock Cafes (etc). It's basically Disney World. Like I said, it's iconic and worth a look if you've never seen it in person, but not a big deal if you miss it. I can hardly imagine a reason I'd go to Times Square now if I was in NY. In fact, I consciously avoid it...

Anyway, aTm, I go back in June. If you are up there then, let me know.

"Fort Tyron is a waste of time. It is like the Medieval Knights tourist-dinner places. Avoid. Unless you’re some rube hayseed wearing socks and crocs."
It's aTm we're talking about here, if it was really like that (it's not), that would be his dream scenario...

Re: La Salle Explorers
It'll be Memorial Day weekend. Fly in Thurs night, out Monday morning.
My thinking so far was to mainly do:
One day in lower manhattan with Ellis Island (not liberty), 9/11 memorial, Wall Street/Lower Broadway, Lower East Side/Chinatown/Little Italy, wife wants to go to the Tenement Museum.
One day with sights around Central Park and both the Natural History Museum and the Met.
One day around Midtown, Rockefeller Center, (thinking Top of the Rock over Empire State Building for a view?), Times Square etc, and the Museum of Modern Art. Planning to go to a Broadway show one evening.

Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

Re: La Salle Explorers
When I was 21, I took a day and walked from Battery Park up to far reaches of the southern parts of Harlem, meandering over to the WTC, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, past Macy’s, then over to Times Square, then up to Central Park and then back down to the hotel at 4 to grab my bags and head out. Everyone should do something like that or more.
I love New York. If I could afford to live there for a few years, I would. I’ve done some of the touristy stuff and will do more, but it’s just an amazing place even without all of that.
We were going to go back this summer (did four days in 2017), but we are using money used for such things and applying it to the never ending quest to have a child, all the while having to watch every shitheel on earth have children they neither want or care for in a meaningful way.

Re: La Salle Explorers
Looks good. The rooftop bars are a thing there and they're very cool. Just be advised you: you pay for the views. $8 beers and $25 cocktails are a thing at those places.aTm wrote:It'll be Memorial Day weekend. Fly in Thurs night, out Monday morning.

And the Guggenheim has Mapplethorpe's bondage and masochism drawings!

Re: La Salle Explorers
I might get a pic of the Guggenheim exterior, but probably wont go in. Definitely want to get in at least a couple hours each at the Met and MOMA but three art museums in three days seems a bit much even for me.

Re: La Salle Explorers
If you're feeling cheap, there is no entrance fee to the Met. They have a "suggested" donation of (I think) $25, but you really don't have to pay anything (or you can give more or less, as you please)...
Peninsula Hotel has a nice rooftop bar (I'm sure there are dozens of others), very nice, but as AA said, the drink prices are similar to the Met's suggested donation, but it's not a suggestion there, you really gotta pay it. If you're looking for something a bit closer to earth (and a bit seedier), there's a cool place near Tompkin's Square called Death and Taxes. There's an even smaller place (or was a couple years ago, you never know how long these places stay around) a few doors down that bills itself as a bitters bar, not sure of the name. Very small space but worth a stop if you want a really good drink. Then you can stroll across the square and pay homage at Charlie Parker's residence on Ave. B...

Re: La Salle Explorers
Is this the poetry thread? I meant to post this yesterday. "The Skeleton" by G.K. Chesterton.
Chattering finch and water-fly
Are not merrier than I;
Here among the flowers I lie
Laughing everlastingly.
No: I may not tell the best;
Surely, friends, I might have guessed
Death was but the good King's jest,
It was hid so carefully.

Laughing everlastingly.

Re: La Salle Explorers
Just talked to my sister. A few days ago she got back from Iceland. She bought tickets on WOW airlines and they went bankrupts, canceled all flights and she was stranded. Her and her husband, my cousin and her husband had to spend $1300 a piece for one way tickets back to Chicago, adn then pay one way rental on a car from Chicago to Detroit
I know 5 different couples that have gone to Iceland due to cheap airfare. All of them hated it.

I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.
