It's April 1984. A strapping young AA was at the Flora-Bama in celebration of getting a baccalaureate degree.
It was a Tuesday, around 9pm and this guy with a guitar comes in wearing a ballcap pulled down low and sunglasses on. He whispers something to the bartender and takes the tiny stage in the front room back when they had the bras stapled on the ceiling.
He starts playing and people really weren't paying him any attention. I was, though. I knew I knew him. He played a cover of Allman Bros' "Melissa" and a cover of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain". And a few things that I didnt recognize.
I knew I knew him, though. I just couldnt place him. His round cheeks and physique reminded me of Andy Kaufman. So, at break, I was going approach him and go with it. I went up to him, and said, "Hey aren't you..." and he cut me off.
"Yeah, don't say anything, though, and I'll send you an album. Just leave your name and address with Danny (the bartender)." I complemented him. Told him he had a decent voice. He just laughed and thanked me.
So, I gave my info to Danny and left. Of course I told everyone I knew about meeting Andy Kaufman and how he must be working on a new skit. About a month later Andy Kaufman died. I was a bit shocked and I am embrrassed to say that I was upset that I never got an album. Comedy albums were pretty big. I had several, Steve Martin, Pryor, Eddie Murphy and a few others. This was gonna be a nice addition to the collection.
Anyway, about a week after that, I got a signed album in the mail. But it wasn't from Kaufman, it was from Jimmy Buffett with a note that it was nice meeting me and thanking me for keeping his secret.
I had made such a deal about meeting Kaufman I was too embrassed to go back to my friends and tell them it was actually Buffett.
Now you know the ....rest of the story.

Yeah. I left a letter out of 'embarrassed' too. Perils of typing on an iPhone after a few drinks.

You're still reeling due to the 'corpulent' tag, aren't you?
