Mississippi ranked 48th in Forbes Magazine's Best States for Business as of 2010.

http://mepconline.com/blog/budget-tax/f ... mpetitive/

The category where it ranked highest was labor costs, placing 20th. The labor supply (educational levels, projected population growth) ranked 49th. Economic climate 49th. Quality of Life 48th.

Bottom line, Toyota isn't putting a plant there because Mississippi workers are smarter than other workers, more skilled, or because life in Mississippi is swell. It's because they will work for less, and have few alternatives.

Mississippi is America's own third world country.

They produced a boatload of great writers, though.

You are so right DSL because there are tons of alternatives for employment in the upper MidWest. The U.S. Gov't understood this. They valued the GM union employee so much that they decided to invest about $300K per worker to keep them employed. Can't trust the quality of those nonunion plants in the South. Sure, the consumer blindly keeps buying theses low quality vehicles, but if they weren't so ignorant to the fact that these vehicles were slapped together on the backs of poor, oppressed, nonunion plant workers, the public would certainly buy more Impalas.

Well, if they are products of the MississiPi, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Alabama public school systems, they ARE uneducated.

I am a firm believer that most students garner about what they put into a lesson. Garbage in = garbage out.

Okay, Sardis, what's your opinion on why Toyota would choose to locate a plant in Mississippi over another state?

Forbes Magazine is not exactly business-hostile and they've made it clear that Mississippi is one of the worst states in the country to do business in, despite the plethora of tax breaks they use to attract industry, largely because the workforce is one of the least educated in the entire country and both its healthcare and educational systems are miserable. So explain to me why cheap, compliant labor is NOT the reason why Toyota is locating there.

The employee manual at the new Toyota plant in MississiPi had better have a lot of pictures.

Well, it helps when you have classes with less than 50 students, enough textbooks for all the students, computers that don't run on MS-DOS, and teachers that earn more than $28K/year.

Agreed. However, that is the condition of most ALL state's public school systems currently.

I'm not because cheap labor IS the main reason. The automotive assembly line process is so automated nowadays it doesn't require a whole lot ofskill. That's my point, a skilled assembly line person has no value now. They are dinosaurs thrown on the trash heap with blacksmiths and VCR repairmen. Why should a company hire a skilled unionized worker for twice the pay of an unskilled MS swamp rat when it doesn't bring any extra value to the end product? If you want to be an assembly line worker in the long run then de-unionize and become more affordable in the market place. If you don't want to do that, then I suggest looking for another occupation which i'm sure are quite prevalent up there per DSL.

And as for dissing on Mississippi, I have never been there but will take prof's word that it's a conglomerate of trailer parks which happen to be lucky to have some coastline and casinos. Mockery coming from an inhabitant of Eastern Ohio is, in of itself, subject to mockery since the only people who choose to remain in the greater Akron/Younstown region are mullet wearing slavs who feel right at home in their Eastern Bloc environment.
