I don't understand why the government isn't consistent with natural disasters.

Either support everyone or no one.

I do agree with the idea however that if you built a house in a flood plain and the government bails you out, you don't get to rebuild there.

same with beach erosion, wildfire, whatever - if its a known issue

I don't agree that the government should be impeding help to California just because Gavin Newsum is a horrible asshat.

When the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of a "Chocolate New Orleans" was melting down after Katrina and not an immediate cavalry send to the rescue, and Dubya was guilted by the media into sending everyone and everything the Fed had to help 20 years ago, the gauntlet was thrown down: all of these disasters are politicized. Its not what any of us want, but that is what happens. It wasn't that way in Homestead Florida back in 1992, but it is now. I know when it started but I don't know why it got this way.

Price gouging in LA

Apartment 2 weeks ago rents for $3,000/month. Today? $9,000 a month. All that the market will bear, right? (horrible)

As a landlord, I would never-EVER do something like this. Its unChristian. Shame on those people or shame on those property management companies.

My buddy stayed at his daughter's apartment when we went to NYC over New Year's to see Phish. 2nd Ave and 10th Street. Not a bad neighborhood but certainly nowhere near what would be considered the really high rent districts in NYC. His daughter lives there with another girl (both pursuing post-grad studies), apartment is nice but small. Small bedrooms, small kitchen, small bathroom and living room. Maybe 600 sq. feet? Hard to say, but certainly not much bigger than that and maybe smaller. The main selling point is that it has a nice, fairly sizeable outdoor patio that only they can access. It's large enough to walk around, has a couch and a hammock, etc. I would guess this type of personal outdoor space is fairly uncommon for most NYC residents. Anyway, the rent is $6000 a month, which they split. It probably shouldn't be, but that's amazing to me, and you know that larger, nicer places in nicer neighborhoods are going for way more than that...

I can't imagine paying $6000 a month at any point in my life including now. We're considering buying a house and temporarily ending up with a house payment of $3500 a month for maybe 6 - 8 months and that scares the shit out of me

$6000 a month is ridiculous. That is like living in an expensive hotel room. At 600 square feet, that is $10 a month per square foot for rent. I am sure you are correct that there are much more expensive places than that. I don't know why anyone would want to live in NYC.

"$6000 a month is ridiculous. That is like living in an expensive hotel room."

$200 a night is an expensive hotel room? I doubt you can even find a hotel in NYC for $200 a night...

"I don't know why anyone would want to live in NYC."

Obviously most people who are living in NYC are making enough money to afford those rents. Millions and millions of people. They're getting paid...

You made it sound like these girls are in school, not getting paid.

They are, but I'm thinking the majority of renters in NYC have jobs. That's why I said "most people living in NYC." I'm sure there are plenty of wealthy people who don't have to work who live in NYC (and probably have other houses elsewhere) as well as students who are being subsidized by their parents (just like everywhere), but my guess is that the majority of renters have jobs that allow them to afford the high rents...

Well said. $200 a night is very expensive in a Biloxi Mississippi casino I suppose, but not NYC.

It’s not very expensive in Biloxi.

It's not very expensive anywhere. You can't hardly rent an AirBnB in a trailer park in Maynard's Taint Kentucky for $200 a night...

The gaming community (and aTm) is furious (or are they??) with Musk. Heads are exploding..

Elon Musk Accused of Serial Fraud By the U.S. Gaming Community in Confirmation That There Is Nothing He Won’t Lie About

Covert account-sharing or -boosting, which gamers say Musk is doing, is a grave offense in gaming—especially if one claims to be an expert gamer. But what it says about the incoming co-POTUS is worse.
