They aren't a non-factor for Boehner? Boehner had to back out a deal because of the tea-party in the House. They weren't a non-factor for Hatch. They weren't a non-factor for Lugar. They were begging for anybody reasonable but Romney. It was being handed to Rick Perry if he hadn't shown himself to be an idgit.
I agree, Romney should run to the middle. But he hasn't moved that way at all. I just don't see him moving to the middle based on anything he's done. I would be glad if he did. I don't trust ideologues. Him governing towards the middle? Just don't see any evidence of that at all.

Peace through war?
Romney talks tough on Iran
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/20 ... ?hpt=hp_t2
“It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war,” he said. “The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers. History teaches with force and clarity that when the world's most despotic regimes secure the world's most destructive weapons, peace often gives way to oppression, to violence, or to devastating war.”

Romney isn't an idealist. He won't take a shit unless a poll tells him to.

I agree and he won't do anything that he thinks will cost him tea party support.

Actually, wasn't that the crux of Obama's Nobel Peace Prize speech?

WTF, W. Mitt Romney? So, you have an adviser go anonymous with reckless Anglo Saxon rhetoric, then follow it up with talk in Israel hinting at the cultural superiority of Israel (or more specifically, the cultural inferiority of Palestine) driving the economic realities of the region. If you add that up with the history of Mormons and blacks, I wonder if Romney just doesn't want to be President...or if he is just letting his real views seep out of the edges.

I've felt for a long time Romney is going to get killed in the debates with Obama. Its not hubris, its just self confidence combined with being out of touch that makes him say these comments.

Vegas has Obama 6-4. They have been more accurate than economists the last 20 years.

Romney has no idea what the average American lives through every day. Than again on the lower scale, neither does DS.

Romney will do better than Palin during the debates (the lower the expectation, the better he will be perceived to have done).

Teaparty in decline? Cruz was backed by Palin while the establishment and Gov backed Dewhurst.

The Dems think they can make a run at Texas in the next 5 - 10 yrs because of the Tea Party and immigration issues. They think they can, at least, turn it into a battleground state. We'll see about that, but the changing demographics make it better than a pipe dream.

If Romney governs from the far right, I agree. He tries to govern compromising and from the middle? No way.

the reality of our economy appears to be that we avoided an immediate crashin 2008 by replacing it with a slow painful one.

An catastrophic rapid crash would have catastrophically crashed the world's economy as well and led to a great depression like very long term problem with unemployment approaching 20% (the great depression had unemployment up to 25%). Even if we go back into a recession, it will not be as deep as the great depression.
Not unless, as with the great depression, we get a natural disaster such as the dust bowl, which was caused by prolonged drought in the bread basket combined with exacerbating and contributing man-made decisions. WAIT! Oh SNAP. We're in trouble.
