The GOP just does NOT GET the GOP Base. They just don't.
I get it. I understand their motivations. The GOP gets huge contributions from the various Chambers of Commerce and lobbyist dollars from big business, and those entities not only want open borders, they want unlimited supply of migrant labor. But that is not what the GOP Base wants. And lecturing/shaming/guilting their base as to who they SHOULD be voting for in the primary, will not help the GOP.
I think the minute Trump announced he was running for re-election, every other GOP candidate needed to exit it.
I mean the GOP should have learned their lesson. I remember Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012 fucking everything all up in the early primary states (early polling) and causing Hannity and Tucker Carlson to lose their shit. But Ron Paul never actually won anything because he could never get past that 20% threshold, unlike Trump.

I probably wouldn't but there are plenty who would have. And that makes a huge difference to the GOP...

well, I suppose some of what you are saying is true.
"They" estimated (estimate being the operative word) that 25% of the Bernie Sanders primary voters, voted for Donald Trump and NOT Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Since Trump's votes went up by 8,000,000 from 2016 to 2020, its probably a pretty safe bet that all the Bernie Sanders would-be-voters that were still alive in 2020 that voted for Trump in 2016, did so again. I'd also argue that LESS of them would have voted for DeSantis or Rubio or Jeb! or any of the others. So if you believe that the 2020 election was on the up-and-up (and I do NOT, but if YOU do) then it would not have made a huge difference.
Math is math. Sure I can't speak for all people and I don't really want to. But individuals make very logical decisions when it comes to voting in elections. Quite often they can't even fully explain the logic as to WHY they voted the way they voted. But there is logic to it. And their subconscious self tells them who to vote for.
